As Kwazy mentions in his post, we got the frame painted last night. the paint doesn't hide my amateur welding skills but I know it's strong enough. Ben (kwazy) decided on the Rustoleum Iron Cast Coat color of engine paint for the frame and I'm really happy with how it turned out. It was dusk when he finished painting it so I didn't take pics until this morning. Seeing it in the sunlight makes me like the frame color even more. It's time for me to break out the industrial sewing machine and get the upholstery done now. The seat upholstery material will cover over the seat bump frame as well as the seat area and it will fasten together under the frame. We are on a schedule to complete before Ben moves to Ohio in late July so we have to keep busy to finish but it's coming along well.

Since we gutted the original wire harness (it was pretty rotted anyway) We have to make a new harness. Here's a few comments about the electrical system:

Headlight and associated indicators run on AC like the original but running 12V lamps to prevent spikes from blowing them out. (common problem on the original 1979 QT that didn't have an AC regulator)

Remaining lights run off a 6V DC system. The original didn't have a regulator on DC either and I'm adding a regulator/rectifier of my own design to protect the battery from over voltage since I'm hoping we will be getting much higher RPM.

We pulled the oil pump from the engine and are running premix, since the oil pumps have a tendancy to dump way too much oil in at higher rpm. We are not using the start computer either so the schematic is greatly simplified. The 1979 didn't have the computer anyway and none of them really need it.

Here's pretty much what it will be. I still have a few wire labels to add but other than that I think it's correct.  I might post the details of the regulator/rectifier later after I prove my design.

I've got to take a trip to Anaheim for most of this week and I don't think Kwazy will have a chance to do much this week either so more progress will have to wait until next weekend unless I get a bit done yet tonight or tomorrow evening.

Here's why we haven't had an update lately. As Cloudrider mentioned, he was on a business trip last week in Anaheim. Hopefully we will get some done today.

Yep, that's me with Carpy at Nostalgia Speed and Cycle in Orange CA. We visited for quite a while and he gave me the tour of his current projects. He's a really friendly guy and I loved seeing all his cool builds.

I'm back home in Kansas now and as Kwazy mentioned, we are getting some work done on the QT today. Kwazy been playing with my latest toy, an air powered die grinder. He's matching the cylinder to the larger exhaust pipe and I think he is going to post pics of that later tonight. I'm working on the upholstery and should have it finished tonight or tomorrow.

I got the exhaust port opened up. The cylinder on top has the exhaust port at its original size. The one on the bottom has been opened up 3 to 5 mm to match the exhaust pipe.

Here's my first attempt at tuck and roll. I took the pictures so it shows it in it's best. there are several areas less than perfect and I think I can tweak a couple seams to make it better.

Dunno if you tried this, but the lady who did my seat used a hair dryer/hot air gun to get a bit of stretch in the cover?
Actually a very nice colour combo, are you going to keep the tank as is?
:) :)

Maybe a heat gun might help too but after putting the seat on it has been left out in the 104 degree Kansas weather for several hours to help with the stretch. I was planning on doing some paint on the tank but I do really like the color combo going on there. I'll probably use that maroon color in whatever I decide to do on the tank.

Cloudrider stripped the triple tree and clearcoated it.

We put in a good 4 hours of work this morning and got it put back together! We threw the stock engine back on it and took it for a spin! No battery in it yet, so no lights. There are still quite a few little things to do.
I love how it handles and the position is great! We got a bunch of pictures but I'll make this post brief, I've got family to see this afternoon. More pics tonight.

Bloody Brilliant. You HAVE to put up a video when it's got the hyper drive unit fitted. :)
