Re: 1975 True North 360

There were minor rust stains inside the tank.

I’ll try electrolysis to address this problem;

Re: 1975 True North 360

After electrolysis, rinse very good with clean warm water, and afterwards with some acetone, and fill her up with gasoline as quick as possible or it wil start rusting at high speed....
If it's only some surface rust I wouldn't even bother, just fill it up with gasoline, and put a small fuel filter inline, and clean it at a regular base. (there's also a small filter screen in the fuel petcock as well...)

Thank you honda007,

Did rinse with water and coca-cola (recommendation from net) and “robotic” finish when tank was dry.

@ CB360 TON,

that's a nice setup you've got there ;D (nice transmitter, got a futaba EX myself :p)

I usually 'de-rust' my tanks by putting some foam and old cloths around and into the dryer it goes 8) (with some sand and fine grid pebbles inside the tank ofcourse ).

Greetings

Re: 1975 True North 360

Haha awesome set up for the cleaning process!! Looking forward to the rest of your build!

Re: 1975 True North 360

Nice, looking good really suits the bike well!

Re: 1975 True North 360

Thank you andycafe,

I had two options; one was more round and taller and second was shorter and flat on top. In my humble opinion second one was more complementing gas tank.

Re: 1975 True North 360

I also think the second one suits better.... Very old-school 8)

Re: 1975 True North 360

Update;

I had this engine up and running before I started the project. No major issues, I had a bit of irregular idling and I was not alarmed due dirty carbs.

Engine is out and I need your advice,

On top end I had one broken dolt, easily removed.

Further examination discovers broken guide cam chain, couple weeks later and I sourced one for reasonable price (discontinued part). This could be one of reasons for irregular idling.

Side covers are off and no surprise, engine looks nice and clean.

Compression test shows 170 PSI on both cylinders L and R.

My question is should I continue with further disassembly or this should be good for this summer.

I have 10K on engine and I’m planning full rebuild and powder coating this winter.

Re: 1975 True North 360

IF you are able to retrieve all the pieces from the broken camchain-tensioner ,there's should be no problem.
But if you can't....those little pieces of tensioner could do some serious harm inside the cases...it could just stay on the bottom, or get grinded up by the transmission, or worse..it would be a ticking time-bomb anyway.
170 PSI is still ok..
Keep that tensioner tensioned ;) or your new (old) one will end up the same.
I'm having a look in re-designing the tensioner, but still have to wait a few weeks (final exams), and I would need the dimensions and curvature from a used (still in good shape) tensioner...
So if you would have the time to measure and sketch a little, I would be greatfull If you could PM me the sketch afterwards 8)

Re: 1975 True North 360

Thank you honda007,

On my first oil change (I was not aware of broken cam chain guide) I didn’t look for broken pieces.

There is small section of plastic missing from cam chain guide where metal part is intact.

What is optimal compression reading range for used 360?
