first bike: 74 CB550 stocker project
« on: Jun 29, 2012, 17:53:55 »
Hello all.
I previously had this bike posted in the cafe racer section but I decided that I wanted a stocker instead! I bought this bike about 4 months ago and since then have put it on the back burner. Now that I've finished IB, graduated high school, and registered for college I can spend some quality time with my bike. Here is a picture of it the day I bought it.

It has lots of rust on it and needs some love. My plan with this build is to keep the stock feel but change some things like colors, bars, mirrors, etc. to get a sleeker look. I got it running last week for the first time since I bought it. The carbs needed a thorough cleaning. After some adjusting It idled steadily and had no problems. And it started on the first kick! I started the disassebly today so I can get the frame and other bits off to the powdercoaters. I'm am taking a break from the 100+ degree weather right now so I snapped a picture of where I'm at. I'm looking to paint the tank and side covers a deep metallic blue.

I have the frame completely stripped and ready to go to the powdercoaters. I need to get the rest of the parts im powdercoating ready. I'm doing glossy black on the:
frame
kickstand, centerstand
engine mounts
gauge housing
wheel rims

How should I clean these forks up? Just clean and polish them?

OK I am new to this stuff which will become painfully obvious shortly. I need to take all these things to be powdercoated and I have some questions

Do the pieces in the head tube come out?

Are these bushings from the rear shocks supposed to come out?

How do I get the pieces on the steering shaft off?

and finally I want to get rid of this steering lock but I can't figure out how to remove it.

I started polishing up the rear wheel today. The rim is pretty dinged up and rusty but my budget is too little to replace it so I'm fixing it up to look decent. I removed the rust with aluminum foil and water. Right side is already done and left in the process.
