Tools to Carry

If you were to take your bike on a road trip, or any ride that would last an extended period of time, what kind of hand tools would you consider essential to have with you?

I could make some guesses, but I want to see what everybody thinks.

i pretty much always ride with a backpack.. i put together a little travel kit.. about the size of a man's shaving kit.. i keep in there the following
-10 & 12mm Crescents
- Small socket driver with a couple assorted sockets. usually 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm
- Vice grips
- Screwdriver with interchangeable phillips and flat heads
- 1 to 2 hose clamps
- electrical tape
- zip ties

i think thats pretty much it. doesn't take up much room at all. works for most "emergency" situations.

All of the above, plus adjustable spanner, leatherman, puncture repair kit and breakdown insurance, also in France it's compulsory to carry spare bulbs, first aid kit, and from tomorrow an alcohol breath test kit.

The flics will still test you if they stop, no one is sure what the procedure is, the general consensus is that you use it before you start driving if you have had a drink, if you don't use it and get caught then presumably the flics cart you off. The alcohol limit is very low in france, one beer could send you over the limit.

A Pistol and rubbers, but if your not going back to the what ever town dont worrie about the rubbers i mean what are the odds of some bastard kid tracking you down in 15 years

Heavy on the zip-ties (the handcuff sizes have multiple uses), and an old hotel passcard with windings of electrical tape and duct/gaffer tape...much less bulky than full rolls yet enough for on-the-road repairs.

I also carry a roll of "self-vulcanizing" rescue tape...amazing stuff.  This may end up taking the place of the electrical tape for emergency repairs

Hmm, this sounds like I ride a bike that is held together with zip-ties, electrical tape, gaffer tape, and rescue tape...which is sometimes true.

Oh dear, when I was driving around Paris after a gig our local friend asked how much I had to drink.  When I replied that I had three he seemed kinda worried about me being over the limit....
