As long as the fitting is correct, you can use whatever type of hose you want.
 
And yes - you can lose the splitter if you have another typre of brake light switch. The less joins / bends / splits in the line the easier it is to bleed  ;)

Type of hose really does not matter and if you are going for the old school look I think the rubber hoses look the best. Good luck with your fix.
