1980 KZ440 LTD Rat Bob
« on: Aug 26, 2012, 17:54:49 »
Picked up a complete 1980 KZ440 LTD with nearly complete parts bike on CL for $175. The complete bike IS titled. Pretty good deal I think...

Going for a rat style bob job on it. Not going to dump a ton of money into it. So plans are: paint wheels, new tires, custom pipes, lower shocks or struts... and whatever else it needs.

Bike turns over just fine and has 5,000 miles on the odometer. Not getting any spark due to a bad pickup coil. Ignition coil was tested and is fine and it has a new battery. My KZ400 has the points system, so this electronic ignition biz is new to me.

Question for those who might know:
1) Would it be possible to swap the points system from the parts bike to the 1980?
2) Anybody have a good source for a pickup coil? Having a hard time finding one.

Picture of it when I picked it up:

Thanks man. At this point, I'm not even sure! Just kinda "going with it". We will see where it takes me.

Keep the elec ignition and make it work, trust me. You'll be MUCH happier in the long run.

Ya? I figured that would be the case, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the input.

Does anybody know if there is a Dyna-S ignition system that would work on this bike? I searched and couldn't find a specific one, so wondering one from another twin would work? I searched Z1 enterprises, and everywhere else I could think of.

Are you looking for a pickup coil? Or a reg coil that goes to the spark plugs? If you take a pic, and it looks the same as one I have kickin around, I may be able to help! I had to swap both my pickup coils from a kz1000 police bike. These are off my 550
