Beachcomber - Back again
« on: Aug 29, 2012, 11:24:54 »
Just back from our break in Saxony. High 30 and 40 degrees, clear Blue skies for nearly 3 weeks and back to miserable rain and cold ..................... ah well.

Sitting at our favourire bar in the local town - and these boys turned up. Just can't escape from bikes can you !

Yes indeed, welcome back.  I was beginning to think you had found the last part of the world where there was  no internet access.

Wow,
humbling to be missed by you old timers [ as in forum - no offence ! ]

And yes - NO internet in our village, in fact most "Handy's" [ cells ] don't get a signal there !

Back and raring to go.

Here's "the team" ready to attack an acre of overgrown "garden" - well actually we have got mechanised mowers / strimmers etc ..., but we just like to fit in with the villagers. !

Hot on the heels of seeing the oldtimer sidecar outfits while I was in Saxony, my German buddy informs me he has several oldtimer German and Eastern Bloc sidecar moulds which he's bought and refurbished.

Here's the first - the "Motek-Classic". I'm waiting for details of specs and prices, but I've seen his everyday sidecar stuff and it's first class. He's one of Germany's top sidecar outfit builders.

He's asked me to field any "English Speaking" enquiries - although his English is pretty good - sometimes tech specifics can be easilly misunderstood !

Look good on Cafe Creme ??

HD,
this is the one I prefer - I think it's a "Stoye" - built in the former DDR or maybe Czech.

Volkmar has the mould for this one as well, but he's revamping the moulds one at a time - and this one's way down on the list. He's also making a special based on the Red one but 10" longer. Mainly for the proportions of a bigger bike. Remember, most of these chairs were tacked on to sub 500cc machines, MZ's and the like.

Here in the UK outfits are certainly making a comeback. I REALLY am tempted to put one of these little buggers on Cafe Creme !

Soooo... which side of the bike do you Brits mount the sidecar onto? Do they make rt hand drive hacks like they do cars? Seems a very limited market but that would be prefered to keep the passenger away from the centerline.

Here is a pic I thought you might enjoy...

Many thanx for the pix HD - don't tempt me !!!!!!!!  ;)

The Chair looks like a cut down / modified version of the ones I saw in Saxony. I'll forward them on to my German pal Volkmar. He might JUST decide to liaise with me on a chair for Cafe Creme !

Talking of Boardtrackers - here's the meaning of the word - take a look at the angle of the boardtrack here ! 100 mph laps were the order of the day in the early 1900's, with the lap record standing at over 120 mph by the 1920's ......omigod.

Races were typically over 100 and 300 mile duration.

And just in case anyone questions the origins of "Boardtrack" racing - here's one they made earlier !

Photo credits to Daniel K Stanekov who has produced a history of early Boardtrackers. AWESOME.

PS - yes we do have the chairs on the other side for driving in the UK - partially because of our [ used to be in the day ] sharply crowned roads - and to assist when overtaking.

Grand-Dad used to tell me stories of the boardtracks, except he called them "Motordromes". Even though I am sure I was a wide-eyed youth, I didn't truly appreciate it until he was gone. I think he used to go to one in the Chicago area.... and of course he had a teens Harley then too, I remember the pics but be damned if I can find them now... Mom's keeping an eye out.  ::)

Not Mine... but along the lines I remember
