Electrolyses?
« on: Oct 17, 2008, 15:15:07 »
Can anyone explain how it works and how to set it up like some have done on this site? I have a tank with a bit of rust inside that I would like to try it with.  Also what is the best method for removing paint down to the bare metal with out scuffing the tank? I would like to polish it. Thanks!

to strip the paint... use aircraft stripped... you will still have to sand the tank to buff it... 600grit, 800 grit, 1200 grit (wet), 2000 Grit (wet), then metal polish!

Here's a direct link to a process I discovered on this forum. I started using it several days ago with good results. It's slow but works very well.

http://twinoak.altelco.net/~jacil/clay/motorcycle/KElecSetup.html

Also, I have had excellent success removing rust from chrome pieces with Oxalic acid. A company called DAP (wood glue/stripper/putty company) makes it. It's called "Wood Bleach" and is granular in a small plastic tub for about $6 at the hardware store. I mix a couple tablespoons/quart of water, let the parts soak for 4-6 hours and wipe the rust off. I would not recommend using it on anything other than chrome plated pieces, as the stuff is very caustic.

Hope that helps.

There is a good "how to" article in this process in the back of the Fall 2008 issue of Motorcyclist Retro (page 97).
