1999 Yamaha V Star 650 brat/cafe thing
« on: Nov 30, 2016, 14:52:36 »
Picked up this bike for 5 bills, always a deal for a running bike. not going to do a full on frame up on this, just mod and try some things. Want a take different than the normal brat thing, more like a 60s Ferrari, we will see.
Pulled the tank and started taking off the paint and bondo
Pulled the exhaust, had some bad road rash so cut off the end, lucky it was longer than the rear pipe.
Getting rid of the plastic side covers so you can see the shock, bought a AGM battery to move the electrical up under the seat.
Removed the plastic covers on top of the cylinders, they seem to serve no purpose, will add some fins or something up there.
Removed the plastic covers over the drive shaft etc, I HATE PLASTIC CHROME

Yup, thats why I stripped it all the way down, a ton of bondo also, this will be an experiment anyway, I have 2 other bikes so waiting to see how this tank comes out, if bad just bin it since I want a Benelli Mohave anyway but I want to see how the rattle can paint job comes out.

What are your plans for smoothing out the hammer marks/dents?  Have you thought about old school leading? Eastwood has a decent starter kit that I have used with ease and does a really nice job

I'm just going to bondo it, I want to see how the paint job comes out, these tanks are a dime a dozen so I will use the lead on my KZ550 when I do that tank, they so badly damaged this tank I don't want to have to line it if they weakened it at all. I figure for $50 bucks in bondo, 2 cans each paint and white primer. Not sure I will get the color I want. hopefully color sanding will leave it pretty orange peel free. If it sucks then I will invest in a spray system. I have a 2007 Virage 250 I want to paint, it's almost new looking but don't want the dumb logo on the sides.

My wonderful girlfriend mounting my new Bridgestone Spitfire tires, need some more work on the tank but looking good, also exhaust is painted ready to wrap. Used aircraft stripper on the rear brake cover, that stuff worked great, ready to polish.
