1984 Honda XR500R "off-road rider wanna be"
« on: Jul 16, 2018, 21:35:13 »
I've been having a blast trying to fit in with a group of "cool kids" that have transitioned in one form or another from cafe bikes into dual sport riders. My dr650 has proven to be a great steed, and I have yet to out ride it's ability, but even so, it proves to be a bit heavy (it's getting close to 400lbs with a full tank of fuel) and taxing to ride on rough single track.

Enter this xr500r. It's a good bit lighter at 265 lbs. (Dry, cannot find wet weight anywhere) and has better suspension suited for off-road than the dr650 does. The bike came to me loosely bolted together from a basket case, so I will have to go though everything, and it also needs a sleeve and a piston, and I'm also swapping frames (more on that later)

This thread will hopefully be two part, documenting the rebuild which may be a bit boring, but also to document the adventures that I hope to take the bike on. Here is the bike as I got it. Is really solid and straight for the year.

I bought this 1986 xr600r frame to transfer my 1984 xr500r "everything else" onto. Guy i got it from pulled a good one over on me, in that it was supposed to have forks with it and it was supposed to be straight. The forks were sold a while back and the cradle has bashed it's share of rocks.... but I drove over 2 hours one way to get it, so I guess the tweaker wins this one. My 500 frame has a number of things cut and broken, nothing major, but I figured a complete, unmolested frame would be easier than fixing all the little bits on the 500 frame.
