I'm a bit rushed, so excuse any lack of information.
My ratchet gear on my kickstarter stripped on my 1970 Yamaha R5. I'm looking at replacing it with and noticed that the RD400 used the same kickstarter assy up until 1978. In 1979 they changed the assy to what appears to be a simpler design. Can anyone confirm if this 1979 RD400 kickstart assy will fit in the R5/RD350 case?
I have a 79 and the gearing is different on the kickstarter. One year only. You should be able to find a used on on ebay for the R5 for a decent price.
Too many years since I had a 2R9 model to remember the differences, but it sounds like you could use a 79 as long as you changed the clutch drum and that probably also requires changes to all the other gears such as oil pump and tacho.
I am busing trying to fit a banshee (RZ350) kickstarter shaft inside a banshee side cover on an RD350/400 bottom end and there's a few more parts to be changed or modified. Anything is possible but it isn't always cost effective.
