I also wanted to mention that the new primary sprocket I replaced it with is a tooth smaller. That may be the reason it's rubbing. I might be able to just cut a sliver off the guard to give it some room.

Is the plastic piece that is fastened to the smaller primary sprocket with 2 screws necessary? I just put on a new chain and the master link keeps rubbing, and slightly binding on this guard. It does seem to serve much of a purpose so I wasn't sure if I needed it. Any advice is much appreciated.
