1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

In Chicago. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/mcy/2732784352.html I'd take less, but trying to avoid the 'How bout $150' lowball emails. Plus, I dont really mind if it doesn't sell, just means I cant buy my buddies old bike (a radian I'd do this to - Not bad for a Radian! And a bike starting...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Ha, well it put it on CL but I dont expect much to happen. Figure I'll give it a weekend as-is to see if someone wants a big project & if not i'll just buy the parts & finish it. I *really* wasnt looking for this elaborate a project - I dont have the tools or space to do it - I wanted...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Can I hone the extra .5mm or will it need to be machined? The machine work in my area tends to be pretty cost prohibitive... :(

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: 1976 CB550 - 1 cylinder not firing - WTF? Yeah, so it turns out is wasn't that at all. It was the quarter sized hole in the #2 piston... Pulling it apart Valvetrain looks OK - dirty, and the last (cyl 1) lobe and follower have some wear. In the future I may put in a hotter cam, but for...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: 1976 CB550 - 1 cylinder not firing - WTF? After some surfing, advice seeking, I was told to check the coil & plug cap resistance - here's what I found. 1/4 - Cap to cap measurement - 27,900 - should be about 25-30k 1/4 wire to wire (caps removed) - 14,300 #1 Cap - 8750 ohm - should be...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: 1976 CB550 - 1 cylinder not firing - WTF? It is getting spark, but I was worried maybe it was losing continuity when it was bent to go into the head (since its a different angle/bend when grounding it against the head.) Unlikely, but I found it worked for someone on a google search...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: 1976 CB550 - 1 cylinder not firing - WTF? Anyone have any thoughts? I'm going to try putting a little oil in that cylinder to see if it can artificially increase compression, then spraying ether/carb cleaner in carb #2 while the other cylinders are running, and then removing the tank...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: 1976 CB550 - 1 cylinder not firing - WTF? Re-rebuilt the carbs, all new o-rings, etc - changed the plugs to 4 new NGK's, cleaned the points with contact cleaner/paper (per clymers manual) & still no firing in cylinder #2. Verified that plug does get spark, and it does. Tried checking...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: 1976 CB550 - 1 cylinder not firing - WTF? I think you're right Teaser. Ordering some carb parts and will take a REAL close look at the carb on cylinder #2 when I'm re-rebuilding. Compression felt OK (and sounded OK starting) but I think I'll check to get some baseline #'s. Thanks all!

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: 1976 CB550 - 1 cylinder not firing - WTF? I just checked that cylinder (#2) for spark & it has it. WTF So the plug came out wet, it dumped raw gas out the pipe, and it has spark.

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: 1976 CB550 - 1 cylinder not firing - WTF? Threw the rest of of the Uni filters on & fixed the wiring leading the the start button (PO moved it underneath the gas tank as a theft deterrent (WTF?) and the bike fires up. It works WAY better using a button instead of jump starting it with a...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: Another CB550 under the knife I'll get a pic this weekend. It definitely fits, but the chrome cap gets pushed in slightly. So instead of looking like this -| | it looks like this -| \ Less severe though. I may be able to create a few more mm of clearance by playing with the carb boots &...

1976 CB550 - Holes in pistons save weight, right ?

Re: Another CB550 under the knife Yeah - got my package with Clubmans yesterday. I'm going to run the wiring externally for now. If I ever 'finish' the bike I may re-run them internally, but I have a funny hunch I'm going to be chasing wires/elctrical stuff for a while!
