Rear shocks swap on GS750, chain tension issues?

Well anyway, I learned the hard way that 14.5"s won't fit the stock pre-'80 GS750 frames. There is only 13.5" travel before the swing arm interferes with the rear peg holders, so im going to have to slightly modify or remove part of the peg holders. Anybody sporting some 14.5" rear shocks...

Rear shocks swap on GS750, chain tension issues?

It's finally getting warmer outside so i can start working on the bike again. 8) I'm swapping the stocker shocks on my '78 GS750 for 14.5" eye to clevis'. I read on a couple different forums about chain tension issues like the chain being loose because of longer shock travel. Others say it...

    Top End Rebuild, need advice.

definitely, but the engine is out of the frame NOW. I have to put it back in to start it and and see if it still leaks, and if it does, looks like i'll have to take it out again ::) ah well, you live you learn i guess.

    Top End Rebuild, need advice.

i was scared i had to since the engine is out, but i guess it would be the smart thing to do before investing and trying anything else. is there a way of doing the top end job without removing the engine out of the frame?. my manual says it has to be taken out, and a friend of mine that worked...

    Top End Rebuild, need advice.

It definitely leaks out of the engine through a few spots as you can see on this picture: head cover gasket all around, head gasket on the right, and i think the base gasket is fine, but i'd probably change it too while i'm in there. I dont think the bike is burning much oil if any as it is...

    Top End Rebuild, need advice.

yes, i've been following your thread and it's giving me second thoughts about starting the engine teardown ??? i know how to wrench things and i can definitely read instructions, but i've never opened and engine before. As I've read on your thread, I was thinking bout the initial testing...

    Top End Rebuild, need advice.

Okay, so my engine was leaking a lot of oil at the top end gaskets and tach drive gear, so i just decided to take the engine off the frame and replace the gaskets. After reading my service manual a few times, and reading some posts on top end rebuilds on here, i'm feeling a bit intimidated by...

Clymer or Haynes for '78 GS750?

All i have is the downloaded (suzuki original?) version of the shop manual. I am a total newbie at this stuff and would like to get the easiest one to understand. I already googled on the matter and it seems like most experienced DIY'ers like the clymer better. But i also read on one occasion...

I know, I already asked the local shops just to re-jet my carbs for pods and they flat out said they wouldn't work on it because it usually is too much work because of seized bolts and all that jazz, and I probably didn't want to pay that much to get some work done on a bike that i probably got...

Yes, i noticed a few nice 750s in here with people that did wonderful jobs with them. Another cool thing about them (GS's) i guess is that I can interchange a lot of parts on them? I've read on here that one could swap the whole top end for a 850 and its pretty much bolt on. Sorry if i posted...

Hi, i'm new here although i've been lurking a bit for the past few months, tons (no pun intended ;D ) of great information on this site, i will be needing all the help i can get as i'm not very mechanically inclined. I've acquired a 1978 GS750 this spring, seemed to be in allright shape but...
