I got some decent 1972 R5 wheels I might be up for trading. the spokes have some rust, but i don't think its anything some electrolysis or TSP won't take care of.

I've spent countless hours staring into the abyss that is the electrical debacle on my '80 XS650. I'm so lost. I have the manual. I've traced my lines. I want to throw up. GIVE ME WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT AND WISDOM.

Moral is i think it looks bad ass to run without a front fender. I get it. it stiffens up the front end and makes it handle better and makes it "safer." I just want a fucking cool looking ride. I think no fenders look good. bottom line. Really I could just chop the fender to make it smaller...

How much? I need just the rim. Im in nashville, but I should be at barber unless I buy a BMW in new york state...then I'll be riding that home that weekend. ;D

Can I run my 1980 XS 650 "special" without a fender or bracing of any kind?

I need an 18" or 19" 36 spoke front rim and I'd like to convert my rear wheel from 16" to 18" as well. So either a 400 or 450 rear rim and a 350 18" or 19" front.

Tim, long term...I would like a "custom" wiring job with minimal lighting. Maybe even redo the loom. Simple ignition switch, maybe kickstart only, no rear indicators, front brake light switch only, etc. But first: I had this bike given to me gratis, covered in dirt and non operational. I want to...

That helps. I was under the impression that, given that the loom is lumped and bundled, all the wiring was kind of tied in together...the whole "common ground" thing is kinda throwing me off a little too. I guess it would be easier if it were linear...but instead its like a fucking redwood root...

So getting into wiring and electrical is, for me, like floating in space. I'm totally hopehelpless. Does anyone know anything about these bikes and how to wire them? I just want to run the motor. No lighting, no riding. I just want to hear it run.

Thanks Tim. Killer. I haver a 1980 "special" and I'm mainly trying to get some new exhaust after I detab the frame. I don't mind welding on new brackets for a new exhaust as long as the only difference in the models is merely cosmetic. I'm looking to rat/brat/caf/track this thing out. It's gonna...

does anyone know if they changed the motor design at all for the xs650's from early 70's to the early 80's? if you DO know, do you also know what the difference between the "special" models and the "standard" models are?

well I MAY be looking for some different exhaust headers because the "special" headers on the 1980 model are too short for a lot of the aftermarket mufflers. also, my rim in front is pretty jacked. its an 18" but I'm not against going up to 19" :D
