dude, i had the same problem and i am still hunting for the answer. currently i am waiting on a "keyster" carb kit to come in. i just sent back the "k&L" kit that did not fit, (no matter how much PARTS UNLIMITED says they do). sounds like we had the same problem. i talked to my old school...

the steel is 1/4" cold rolled. i am going to stretch fabric and skin it in fiberglass. -josh.
