    78' KZ400B - another rabbit hole.

Re: 78' KZ400B - another rabbit Oh god that pictures awful. That’s not the finished bike! How does it decide which picture from the thread is going to be used for the thumbnail [emoji848]

    78' KZ400B - another rabbit hole.

Re: 78' KZ400B - another rabbit I’ve gone through a full resto, top end rebuild of a 76 Kz400, so if you do end up doing it and have a question I may be able to help. I have to agree with one of the earlier responses though. You could spend thousands and do all the modifications in the world...

    KZ400 Resto-mod

Unfortunately, I don’t have any answers for you. They were on the bike when I bought it, I’ve never found any identifying markings and I’ve never seen pictures of these exact mufflers anywhere. Sorry. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    KZ400 Resto-mod

The 77 A1 from which my bags and cargo rack came. Early pic of my bike with the faded and mismatched paint. Cool original kawi stock photo. Even back the paint looks a little mismatched doesn’t it? Pics of new paint and bags with different striping scheme. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    KZ400 Resto-mod

So I already broke my schedule of once a week posts but maybe once a month is more like it. It was fall of 2016 that I decided to start on the restoration. I had toyed with the idea of adding a second or third bike but I thought I could create a bike that met all my needs based on the kz400...

    KZ400 Resto-mod

I found mine on eBay, but I’ve seen parts bikes of the 77 KZ400 A1 (the one with the bags and fairing). Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I am back!! Apologies for the hiatus. Hopefully I can keep the posts coming at a once a week rate from now on.

    KZ400 Resto-mod

My build thread is in reverse so I'm just recalling what happened 4 years ago, but fwiw I followed the shop manual procedure and tested at the appropriate rpm levels and it was always returning 12.8-13.4. Sent from my iPhone using DO THE TON

    KZ400 Resto-mod

First update is kind of a boring one. After I got the bike into my apartment I did the standard "back to life" treatment. Although at the time I'd never done any of the stuff before besides an oil change. This is where KZ400.com came down from the internet heavens to bless me with a wealth of...

    Voltage drop caused by solder?

@sonreir Manufacturer doesn't list # of cells but I am getting 9.5v. Is there a way to know the cell qty? So I can see if this thing is worth saving and if it was enough for my bike to begin with? I went direct replacement rather than trying to downsize so I don't think that'll be an issue but...

    Voltage drop caused by solder?

Shop manual says should be 14.5 volts at the battery across the rpm range, but I'm getting high 12s at idle and low to mid 13s at higher rpm. I had to make a repair to 2 of the 3 wires from the stator that involved soldering new connections. My question is could the repair be causing the voltage...

    KZ400 Resto-mod

Oh yes my friend. Resto-mod is the correct nomenclature. She is heavily modified. I don't want to just list everything because I plan to go through a bunch of it, so you'll have to wait! Sent from my iPad using DO THE TON

    KZ400 Resto-mod

I've been meaning to do a build thread for a while even though the bike is basically done by now. So I'm just gunna start this damn thing and take it one step at a time. It may not be chronological, it may not even be logical but I think it's worth sharing because I learned a shot load and I...

Charlie's Place ignition on KZ400, full write up

I’ve been looking for an electronic ignition system for my 1976 KZ400D for some time and I’d found 4 potential options. I’ve put a lot of work trying to make more power out of my KZ and a high output coil with a nice ignition system was the last step. Here’s what I found: 1- Boyer Bransden out...

    76 KZ400 "Grimy"

Re: 76 KZ400 "Grimy" I found the same ones on eBay! Brand spanking new. However these did not come with an extended bolt for the engine mount. Did yours come with that? I should be able to find the right bolt at Ace hardware no problem though. Sent from my iPhone using DO THE TON

I think you should sell me those engine guards cuz they'll look better on my resto-mod ;) ;D

    Head gasket with overbore

You are correct. It did not occur to me at the time to check whether there was overhang. When I wrote the original post I was not aware that gaskets would be slightly oversized so I assumed I had an overhang that I didn't notice. As it turns out the reason I may not have noticed is because there...

    kz400 intake boots/carbs

There's a gent on eBay from across the pond that makes new kz400 intake carb holders since Kawi doesn't have any. They are well made, Oem quality for sure. Just search on eBay and you'll find them. I haven't seen any carb to air box boots available, but you can easily make them as others said...

    Head gasket with overbore

Had a few people check the cylinder diameter on OEM gaskets (the same one I bought) and measurements came back as 65.2mm and 65.5mm. I'm also going to check the old OEM gasket that I pulled off when I get home. Stock bore is 64mm and .040" over is 65mm, so I think I'm going to be alright. I...
