Re: '78 CB400
You should be able to find some stainless steel metric allen cap screws at a local hardware store like I did.
-The float bowl screws are: PAN, 4X16
-The screws for the top bracket that spaces the carbs are: PAN,5X12
-The screws for the top vacuum cap are: PAN,5X16...
Me 3, wiring 2!
I had the grounds and the signal wire flipflopped front to back. For some reason when I hook up ONLY the rear signal, I have to connect the grounds to the signals and vice-versa. Then I went up front and hooked up the wires the same way and the problem came back. I then had...
Re: Can't figure out how much oil to put in my GN400 forks? HELP
I think the correct method is to measeure the oil level height from the top of the fork tube. Not everyone has a fancy fork oil-level checker-tool so they give the approx amount in mL.
What I would do, is measure the inside...
Re: Flashing Taillight/Signal WIring Issue, Losing my mind
That's what I was hoping, but I swear I've checked and double-checked all teh wires in the bucket. THere's 4 big connectors, all plugged in. There's some loose brown wire(not used, I think) a green double groun d, the orange and...
Re: Flashing Taillight/Signal WIring Issue, Losing my mind
Yeah,, I figured.
I have a multi-meter, I'm just not sure what to do with it. I used it to check the continuity of some of the wires and checked the battery voltage, but that's about it.
Re: Flashing Taillight/Signal WIring Issue, Losing my mind
I'll pass on the hand signals. Most of the troubleshooting has been done with the bike off. After that didn't work, I started the bike up and checked the wiring some more. It didnt help.
I guess I was hoping for an easy fix, as I...
Solved!. See below.
Recently did a engine rebuild and installed some new headlight brackets on my 78 CB400T, so I had to disconnect all thr wiring at the front of the bike. Got everything back together , but now I'm having issues with the signal wiring and the tailight.
Here are teh...
Found this on the hondatwins.net board. A scanned copy of the factory shop manual for the 78-81 400 Twins.

On purpose? What for? To raise compression a bit?
Edit: I may have to remove the head bolts anyways. My Clymer manual didn't mention anything about putting sealant between the head and the camshaft holders. It IS mentioned in the factory Honda manual , though. Shit.
Well, I was cruising along on my engine rebuild, getting everything put back together. I wasn't paying close enough attention when i looked up the cylinder head bolt torque value. The manual says 30-36Nm, or 22-26 lb/ft. I torqued them to 33 lb/ft. Didn't catch it until after I started the...
Not sure how much of the electrics are different, but I do know the hondamatics have a switch to make sure the side stand is up before you shift gears. You could probably jump those wires easy enough.
Edit: looking at my clymer wiring diagrams, it looks like there is the kickstand switch...
What exactly are you disputing? That none of the gaskets are right? That 1 particular gasket is wrong?
I recently bought a NOS OEM top end gasket set for the same bike, and they look very similar.
It's kinda hard to tell in the picture what the side cover gaskets look like.
No problem, I don't really need any measurements any more. Sounds like I'll need a whole triple tree/stem set to make this work. You can PM me with a price for your whole set, though. The upper triple from the cb450t with the integrated bar mounts seems to be a little better then the cm...
Morgan, thanks for the info. SInce you actually did this mod, can you tell me if it was worth it? Did you notice any difference in the way the bike handled? No need to take any measurements unless you want them recorded here for someone else to use later.
Mike
Have any idea how much? If not, I guess we'll have to see what maritime biker says.
I did notice another problem while researching. The type of threading is different between the two stems, I think. The picture I posted ealier is from the stamped upper, and this picture is from the cast upper.
