Is it necessary to run one in order to keep your filters/carbs healthy?

The bike will run good, start right up, and be just fine. Then it will have some trouble starting and will spit and sputter around 3-4K and generally runs poorly. I'm thinking there is probably something inside the carb but i really have no idea. Have any ideas on what this could be? Thanks...
