I also added a speedo, $16 from China including postage. I seems too cheap but if it falls apart replacing it is easy.

Oh and thanks Neckzips, might be time to drag that old beater out of the barn, mine makes a great little city run about and works well on the rough dirt roads around here too.

Cheers and I have checked out your fish build Bro. A few shots with the new tank. I am still undecided on this paint job and might try something else.

    78 GS400 special

Re: Project SFTSM 78 GS special I also meant to mention Gram that I had other wheels to copy off as it seems all wheels are not the same spoke pattern. My front is different from my back but at at glance they look the same, I worked that out when I tried to spoke the front in the same pattern...

    78 GS400 special

Re: Project SFTSM 78 GS special I don't have a clue what a lacing jig is, I just put all the spokes in the hub, pointed them in the direction they were supposed to end up, placed the rim around the hub then put the spokes in one at a time in a clockwise direction adding a nipple loosely by a...

    78 GS400 special

Re: Project SFTSM 78 GS special I guess I have lived in the tropics for too long, when I looked at your pics I wondered what that strange white stuff was all over the ground and at first thought it was salt until I realised it was the stuff you ski on. Jim

Now I have new wheels and tires, the bike rides so much better on the road. The old trail tire and 21 inch rim were a bit lumpy and now it is as smooth as. Also the twin leader CL360 brakes pull me up so much better. The new tires and hub have added lots of weight but that seems to be to the...

    79 XT500

Thanks for the memories. My first "big bike" was a XT500C It was rougher than yours when I bought it second hand in the early 80's and I hammered it to death on road and trail. When it finally stopped running I swapped it for a plastic bag with some sort of stuff in it. I am thinking that when I...

A quick note on the gearbox modification, I decided I wanted to do something different and if you look closely at the 350 box you can see that I added a reverse gear to the bike. After much thought and talking to more experienced bike fans I decided to go for Dunlop K70 18 x 4.00's. The...

So far it is simple Eric, I will let you know how it turns out once I ride it though. I bought a 77 box for my 76, the fifth gear on the main misses the crank by about half a mil but that is all it needs to miss by. One of the guys on the Xl forum mentioned that he had to take a shade off his...

I have started re-building a motor which is a first for me. These are pics of the first modification, I am changing from the XL250 gearbox to the XL350 gearbox. The 350 has a lower first, higher fifth and more even spacing so is a better box for on the road(so I am told). I will be dropping to a...

I have mainly been riding lately but also slowly adding to the picture. Am rebuilding a second motor, more on that later. These originally painted cases take a bit to polish, not show but good enough for what I want.

Well done with the stencil, that is the sort of detail I really like Steve. Home made but just like one from the shop.

If that goes up for bike of the month it would get my vote Steve, nice work. It is a bloody shame they make you put those giant number plates on the back though, I am a bit annoyed by the size they make us wear where I am but yours is almost a bill board.

Just getting ready to replace front shock seals. The ones that were in it were the wrong seal as they were only 11mm and the bike is supposed to have 13.5mm. The new seals I have look like they do a better job than the ones I took out.
