If you do attempt it with the white foam then one way to cut it with minimal mess is to heat up a knife with a propane torch. We do this when making packing material for custom pieces at work. Cuts through it like butter and reduces the tendency for it to crumble, but it's stinky so do it...
I’ll chime in on this one…
Ride both, go with whatever is more fun or “feels” quicker. Failing that I would at actual data of both bikes in good condition, not anecdotes like “my mate once had a sportster and it was slow and I used to out-drag it with a XS250” sort of thing that seems prevalent...
It would probably screw your performance up, but if you can work through it, hopefully with some dyno time I don't see why it wouldn't work. After all, 4 cyl cars used to have a single carb. You could run a nice SU carb, that would look wicked!
Check out this bike...it's a CB550 top end on...
Based purely on spare parts availability I would go with the 75. Quite a few parts for the 1000cc ironheads don't fit the 79 due to a frame change. But it depends on what you're going to do to it, if you're ok fabricating your own stuff or modifying then no problem.
After this amount of time...
Some good discussion going on here.
Here's a story...
I broke down on my CM400 last month (crank bearing failed, caused left piston seizure). Pushing it 8 miles back home I was passed by maybe 25 bikes over the course of 3 hours. Maybe two-thirds were riding newer (twin cam) big twins, the...
If it's leaking from the overflow you could try replacing the brass overflow tube. For some bizarre reason they are rolled and wind up leaking at the seam. This worked on my CM400.
Exactly, here's similar info from John Bradley's "The Racing Motorcycle: A Technical Guide for Constructors Vol2"
I would look into tubular bracing (triangulation) wherever possible if you want to get that chassis as stiff as poss. I once saw an article where a KZ or GpZ frame was...
Welcome dude!
Those 3 valve 450 twins are sweet little motors...and with a bit of imagination with bodywork etc you'll have a nice cafe racer.
I'm down in Camas, I was going to build a CM400 cafe but I just got it on the road and it promptly blew a rod bearing, had to push it home from...
Have you got any pics of the crank journal / bearings?
My CM400 just locked up solid yesterday, I'm pretty sure the left rod bearing is to blame. This will be the third time I've had one of these engines fail (the other two were on CB250N/CB400N) but I still love them.
Re: 78 CB400Tii Hawk not starting help
Strip and rebuild your carbs for sure. You just never know if a previous owner had them apart and re-assembled them incorrectly. On my CM400 the PO put the idle screws in without the springs or o-rings and had tried to use silicone to seal them.
If...
Top end should fit fine. Also if you can get the carbs from a non-automatic CB400 or CM400 you'll pick up a decent amount of power. Honda fitted smaller carbs to the auto to give it enough torque at lower speeds to work well with the torque converter. You'll need the inlet rubbers to go with...
Hi
I'm designing a new frame, and I want to use the triple trees from a KZ650. A Z650F1 was my first "big" bike and I always loved the front end feel.
I'll be making the steering head tube (headstock) from scratch and I know the bearing sizes so I just need the overall length of the steering...
Sorry for the threadomancy, but I just tried this method to clean the nasty carbs on my CM400 and it is the absolute shit! I wish I had known about it sooner, it would have saved me so much hard work over the years.
These carbs were on a bike that was sitting for approx 20yrs, had lots of...
