G'day Monaro and welcome to the forum. I am in Sydney too. I've got an 81 xs250 that i am half way thru building but the rain is slowing things down.
Good luck with your build.
Thanks Crazy, I will check those valve springs (gotta stop working on this when I am half asleep). According to Haynes, you set the crank at LT and the cam pip at 12o'clock.
Sorry for the thread hijack. :)
Hi McKay,
Here are a couple of pics that I took of my timing / cam position.
Not sure if it is useful of not but I thought I would post them anyway.
Cheers.
Hey McKay, bummer that this problem is still giving you troubles. I suggested you post on an xs specific forum but haven't seen your name show up. I can tell you that the guys on xs400.com have been invaluable help to me fixing my bike. Troubleshooting an xs400 is basically the same as trouble...
K&N foam pods work fine on my '81 xs250 - a tad bit lean with stock jets but did not cause any issues.
fyi - the guys on the xs400 forum recommend if you are using cheap emgo chrome pods then put the pods on the end of the stock air filter hose where you would put the stock air filter box.
I just stripped 4 layers of paint off a swing arm & triple tree using wire brushes and thought maybe something like the brush in the link below would work well on cylinder fins.

At only a couple of dollars it could be...
I got my 30 year old jugs vapour blasted and I am very happy with the result. I wanted the "just out of the factory" satin cast alloy look. You can go shinier if that is your thing too. Doesn't cost much and way easier than polishing it yourself.
Here are the before and after pics.
One more thing, did you have much slack on the front side of the timing chain when you installed it? If there is slack then when you install the tensioner it can pull things out of whack.
Here is my $0.02
My '81 xs250 has BS32 carbs. Completely stock except for k&n pods and runs a bit lean with needle c clip in the middle and main jets are 117.5. I haven't messed with any of the settings, just cleaned, cleaned and cleaned.
Your compression is pretty low - at least 125 would be...
G'day Will, the build is coming along nicely. I think the seat hump looks great - nice lines and just the right length. The white wall tires looked cool. lol
I am just about to paint my wheels with VHT Engine paint but would like to know what paint you used?
I have bought a few things from...
I had a leaky petcock & left the bike sitting for a few months & basically emptied the petrol tank into into the bottom-end. Luckily I changed the oil before riding it as riding it could have = boom.
Nice buy mate. I paid a bit more than that for mine but it had rego & i live in Sydney where bikes seem to cost more than the rest of Oz.
If you havent already then i reccomend you change the oil & oil filter. You will probably need to get a new oil filter bolt as they are soft as butter & the...
Hi mate, sounds like you are having a tough time with the old bs32's.
Firstly I want you to know that I do not claim to be an expert on carbs and probably 99% of people on here have more knowledge about carbs than me.
I have an 81 xs250 that I am currently working on and hope that I can help...
