Turned out the donor front end had more problems internally than were worth fixing so I went back to stock in the meantime.

So if I pull the plugs and things spin freely, we know it's an engine issue and the starter if fine just as I assumed given the testing. Is this something in need of a fix or as you stated will improve once the rings seat?

Makes sense. I am able to kick it, but I suppose there is a chance it's borderline too tight and pulling the plugs is still a simple test. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks @themotoworks, I haven't. Curious how pulling the plugs would potentially change what the starter does? Interesting, though I think I'm missing what that would tell me about re-assembly.

It seemed to, seemed to have plenty of juice. It seems like it’s spinning ok, just slowly. Like it’s pulling something heavier than it’s supposed to.

I agree, and given that almost the ONLY wiring on the bike that can go pseudo wrong, it has to be ground. if any of the other connections (of which there are few) I would get no response at all.

It has to be the ground or I'm the one unlucky person with 2 bad starters. I guess theres a chance the solenoid is bad, but I've never seen one just run slow, I've only seen them work or not.

That was what I thought as well, I've tried two separate ones with the same result. Ever seen any load issues with 8AWG with thin brains as apposed to 8AWG with thick braids? I've used thin braids before with no issues, but that's the only non-stock item here aside from the battery.

There's a battery, I'm testing with bigger battery with 230CCA so I can jam on it harder for testing. It cranks the starter but seems to start dragging even while not draining the battery.

Hmm, I've tried the same setup with a solenoid and used a button to trigger it and got the same result unfortunately.
