    How to test and troubleshoot your charging system

    Don't y'all use a load for testing alternator output? Standard English practice is to connect a 1 ohm load resistor across the leads. This insures that the alternator can supply sufficient current. Voltage alone tells only half the story.

    Been a while since I worked on a CB750. Tell me, are the petcocks vacuum operated? Is there a line from the petcock to the intake manifold? I ask because we had a similar mystery with a GS850 at the shop once. Turned out the diaphragm in the petcock was torn. This allowed raw fuel to be sucked...

    At least the Brits used the same color code for everything they built, regardless of make or model. You are quite right that DPO is usually responsible for messy wiring. However, 40 year-old wiring will always give trouble. Time for a new harness?
