Its a points system, and I meant to say contact breaker at least that's what the manual called it. The bike has two wires coming off the bike from under the motor, and another coming from the controls on the handle bars. I just need to know weather to hook up the one from the handle bars to the...
I stumbled upon this and felt the need to share http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vw-Trike-Project-Dune-Buggy-Frame-GS-550-Triple-NO-Reserve-/281161541877 also wondering if there is a spot for stuff like this on this site. I remember finding a craigslist post once but wasn't sure if I could find it again.
I just redid my seat and I used this stuff called hi-tack black. Its pretty nice vinyl and makes you feel a little more connected to the seat.

My biggest problem I'm having right now is keeping the bike running, I believe my problem may have been in my petcock but I wont know for sure till I get my tank fixed from me trying to weld in a new plate to fit a different petcock.
Re: 78 gs550 cafe seat build
I got the seat cover made up today at work. I'm pretty excited about how well it came out considering I haven't sewn up tuck in roll pleats in almost a decade. I'll post pics tomorrow once I have the seat cover installed on the pan and mounted on the bike. I...
Thanks for the help, I think I will go with the latter of the two for the capping off the carbs. I'm sure my neighbors wont mind me firing off a few rounds if I explain that I'm just working on the bike.
my bike is a is a 78 gs550. I was thinking about going with something like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/09-Yamaha-V-Star-650-Vstar-XVS650-PET-COCK-PETCOCK-FUEL-GAS-SHUTOFF-/130888401624?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item1e798e82d8
The seller is right down the street from me so...
Has anyone ever modified there tank to fit a new petcock. After much trouble trying to get my original petcock working I am ready tho give up and get eather a new one or something close to stock off of a late model bike. I'm just not sure if I can just simply cut the old hole out and weld in a...
If you can hook up a tank to your welder I would suggest doing so. I have the Lincoln electric handy mig welder, and I got a gas tank from the local weld supply shop and it works great.
My best piece of advise to anyone first learning to weld is don't be afraid to burn that metal together. I...
I got the seat shaped the way I wanted it and smoothed out with the die grinder.
I started building a small fiberglass part to close off the area where all the electronics are mounted and it will also hold the taillight. I didn't have any fiberglass mat, but I did have some carbon fiber laying...
I kept blowing a fuse and traced it back to the coil so I am wondering can you fry a coil by holding down the start button way to long? I am hoping that, that is what happened so that if I replace it, the new one doesn't go bad encase something else might have caused it.any thoughts?
I am really learning a lot about bikes and having a great time doing so. So I now know that I will not be buying my air filters on eBay for 20$, and I can't just slap on after market parts and expect the bike to run like a Honda Civic. My goal was to get the bike running before the season was...
I am having very similar issues with my 78 gs550, and from what I am reading I think that my hoses are not routed correctly. Does the vacuum hoes that runs from the petcock go to the carbs themselves or to the vent above the cams. I bought this bike from my uncle and he was telling me he had...
So far I have chopped 6" off of the rear of the frame and made a frame loop out of the old handlebars. Then I made a new seat, and reused the orig plastic tail piece to fit the new brake lamp, mounted new eBay turn signals, front and rear. I also took all the plastic off around the gauges to...
