advice re subframe mods - engineering melbourne

Hi, I'm currently restoring a dual shock xl250 into a tracker type bike.

minor mods I've done is change front rim from 23 to 19, dropped forks 1 inch.

I need to cut the simple old sub frame and weld new higher, flatter section. With webbing will be stronger than factory.

I read- " The RTA will register a modified motor cycle with a properly designed custom frame, extended forks, and structural modifications but only if submitted with a report from a recognised engineering signatory, detailing the changes and showing that the changes have not made the cycle unsafe.."

So I need an engineers report to get this registered eventually ? Who would you recommend for welding / engineering Melbourne?

Slabs or cash happy to trade for any work!!

The man for that used to be Bob Martin down in Ferntree Gulley but he passed a way a few years ago. I just "googled" him and the business is still listed at the same address, so give them a call.

Well, the number goes to someone else.

I did some more research and I think due to cost, best bet is to get it registered as is then do the sub frame mod.

Don't want to, but its simply over budget for this project..

If you are on the north end of town, we found a welder up in Coburgistan who's an ex A grade bike racer. He's pretty cheap. I can't find his contact details but he's up around Gaffney st and we found him either through the yellow pages or on line ( I don't remember which)

Cheapest solution is if you find the tube stock you want to use and bend and cut it to shape and get a decent welder to stick the parts together.

thanks, thats what im starting to think..

i do have a mate whose ok with a welder..but i was trying to figure out if should do this before getting registered or after, its stopping me building a seat, and if engineering not too expensive to do it legit

i guess i have enough to do to get it on road!!

hiya mate, another melbournite here, would definetly recommend rego first, chop frame second......

the RTA will spot a chopped/modded frame from a mile off but if you rego it stock then cut and shut you should be fine, even if you get pulled by the cops just tell them that its the stock frame with a different seat, (if they even ask, they prob won't even notice especially if you immedately put your helmet and gloves onto the seat)

you MIGHT get a rwc but when you take it to the RTA to rego it, they will notice anything that doesnt look 'normal' (frame/wheels/longforks/shortforks/silly bars etc) if they reckon that its substantially changed from the original they'll want engineers certs that have been issued as the work was done (not after, which of course is obviously too late after you've cut something)
a RWC is really only concerned with safety (tyres/brakes/lights etc) but if the tester reckons that a modification has been made which renders the vehicle unsafe for the road he can fail you. that leaves youwith the option of either fixing the changes or taking it somewhere else and try again.

cool, i might take it on the ute to a motorbike tyre guy, pablo's, who does rwc also and have a chat about options...

ive registered quite a few unregistered cars , they only seem to want a valid RWC , check vin/ engine numbers..they never look at the car for 1 sec, but is it different with bikes?

we are talking vic roads right? I think rta is nsw?

pablos are excellent guys, always had good service from them

the RTA tend not to worry about cars as such but try taking a hotrod in, they'll be all over it like a rash, same with custom bikes, basically they have an aversion to anything 'odd' (either that or they're arseholes, opinion is split on that one)

just checked where you've put as your location (cnr warragul and centre) that puts you fairly close to one of my mates just off warragul rd towards north rd, have you seen an Indian chopper/ several Buells/ Guzzi sidecar/Morini getting around there? he builds bikes for a living and gets just about all his tyres from pablos

check the DTT australia section in the forum section and check the pix from our clubs show on the weekend, it was in murrumbeena not too far from you

nah sorry, its an annual thing though we may do another in early summer, i'll let more people know earlier next time

if you mean the XR motored beast, can't remember the guys name but he was a mate of tom who is known as STRETCH CB on this here forum, he rides the cool green KZ400 in the pics. they came down with some other mates, all on cool home modded bikes, great to see

scott at pablos confirmed no issue to alter the subframe prior to a rwc .. was thinking its not really structural
