Honda CB360 Rebuild

I am in the middle of cleaning parts. I read on page 51 in the shop manual, "CAUTION: Do not disassemble the oil pump assembly unless necessary." In bold no less. Should I anyway or just reinstall it... without soaking in cleaning solution? My rebuild kit did not include the gasket that is in there but I can source it.

If you found any 'shiny bits' in oil pump pick up screen it's best to take it apart to check.
If it's low mileage (almost all are) just put some oil in one port and rotate by hand to make sure it comes out the other side

I appreciate the reply. When rotating it, I noticed a slight and random resistance. So, I decided to take it apart and it has a few small gouges on both the inner and outer rotors. I decided to buy one on Ebay with the hopes it is better.

Here's a conundrum: after torquing up the crankcase on my cb360, I found this thing on the floor. It is a tiny diameter steel spring with the ends joined to form a ring. I have never seen it before and have no idea if it came from the cb360. Does anyone here recognize it?

Yup, that was it. I pulled out the new shifting shaft seal and that spring-ring thingy was missing from it. I put it back in and reinstalled the seal. That thing sure seamed to go into the seal easy. I hope it stays. The shaft seams to fit through the seal easy as well. I guess if I have a leak, I'll look there first. Should be relatively easy to replace with the engine back on the bike.

Thank you so much for the info. You put mind at ease.
