So as the story goes i bought a bike around a year ago a 1971 t250. I bought it as a project with everthing needing work even the wheels were looked up. So I got it home worked on it now its looking like it will be ready in time for spring and was wanting to know about getting a title. I have asked around and seareched myself with an end result of everone saying something different. so I am at a loss. Another question being that some have said iil need to get it inspected and thats ok I am just wondering if i Would have any problems with it being a two stroke? Also contaplating an engine swap to a different 2 stroke. Any help is appreciated thanks and sorry if did not explain myself clearly

I've also looked into this a lot so I'm interested as well. After a lot of searching the easiest but risky way I've found in Virginia at least was to go for an abandoned vehicle title. It only costs $25 but requires a ~30 wait. They find the record of who's on the title and send them a letter and they have 15 days to respond, then there's 15 days for any lien holder to claim the bike and after that its yours. So depending on the back story of the bike i.e. barn find, owner lost the title etc. it might be worth it, but if the owner comes forward they can nab the bike back and if you've invested a lot of time and money into the bike it might not be worth it. There are also rebuilt and salvage titles but yes, those usually require inspections.

If anyone has experience with abandoned vehicle titles any info would be great. I'm no expert so if I'm wrong about any of that feel free to correct me. I'll be watching the thread!

also the vin is wierd like it say t250 then a dash then five digites so i cant even look any thing up on it atleast nothing i could find on my home pc

That's not too strange for these old bikes. My cb350 and cb360 motor vin #'s start with the model as well. Not sure if it'll work for the older bikes but you can try to just punch the vin into carfaxm it's worked before. Also your car insurance company might do the search free of charge.

The Abandoned Vehicle way in Virginia is a bit more involved, but its worked for me 4 times.

ok well I will stop by the local clerks office in the next week or so when i get some free time (new baby) and I'll let you all know how it goes thanks for the advice

What are the steps for the VA abandoned vehicle? I was told: Fill out the form, pay the $25. The DMV sends a letter to the last title holder, give them something like 15 days to respond. If they don't claim it then the DMV posts somewhere (forget where they said) that lien holders like insurance companies can claim the bike. If a lien holder doesn't claim it they said they'd issue a title. I thought it seemed a little easy on my end. What's the real deal?
