hi, i finished my bike a while back and just now realized that my title only matches the motor. with my understanding the two vins never matched even in other bikes. my question is, if i go to the dmv to try to have my title swapped to the frame is there any chance my bike could get confiscated or held for any reason. or if you have any helpfull information that could save me some dmv time please let me know. thanks guys

No. They'll only impound it if it is stolen. It's obviously not so you're good... Titling a bike with the engine number is not that uncommon and happened all the time in the 60's and early 70's your title will have a vin with a letter "E" in it which is for the engine vin. You should be able to go to the BMV/DMV locally and have them change it since its yours it shouldn't be a big deal... You are correct on frame/engine vin numbers, they never matched until about 1982 or so. Frames and engines were made in different plants and not "paired" up during the mating process... Really though you should be fine with a title with the engine number on it. My honda dream was titled like that for decades and was fine.. Hope that helps.

Around here that would be grounds to impound the bike.
Probably would get it back after they figured out everything was OK, if it was.

New the bike would have been titled off the frame, so at some poi t someone changed it.
Most of the reasons for doing this are not good.

Check with your local DMV but I seem to recall reading that WI used Engine Numbers for the VIN and not Frame #s.

Yep. Wisconsin titled bikes off the motors til like 76. It's no big, you just have to mention it if a cop gives you grief. Not worth the trouble to change it. To be honest, I don't think they will, anyway.

Some new bikes when sold were titled off the engine like my 1964 honda ca77... Always was then I just recently changed it. No big deal and no police impound. ;)

When I titled my bike in WI last year, I handed the guy the old signed title then 2 minutes later he handed me the new title and said have a nice day. WI does not give a flying crap where the VIN is on the bike, so long as it's there somewhere.
