2x stroke street tracker - project coming together slowly.

Thanks for the head's up on swingarm....I'll be sure to have the wheel alignment dead centre. Currently needing spindle mods as the wheel bearing are 17mm i/d but the swingarm jaws are 19mm....so looking to have the solid spindle turned down, with a 19mm shoulder at the head end and a top hat spacer at the nut end. Jobs like these hold me up as I don't have a lathe and rely on mates to help.

I'll be aligning the shocks mount to mount, this should highlight any differences you mention. Cheeers

You might be able to find bearings the right ID for the axle and the right OD for the swing arm. Might be easier and faster AND you'll get the security of new bearings as well. When I switched swing arms I was able to find bearings w/ the correct ID, OD, & thickness so that I was able to use the Kawi swinger and the Honda bolt.

that swing arm has a 20mm (nominal) axle.I would suggest going with the 20mm axle and swapping bearings on the wheel as the width of that swing-arm wants a bigger diameter bolt. You will have to have a new internal bearing spacer made though. Why don't you use the stock GS1100E axle? alternatively you can buy 2nd Gen GSXR axles (20 mm) and cut to length. plus then you get a lightweight hollow axle.

That's a good idea solo......I had tried that route, but sadly, the o/d on the NSR wheel bearing housing is too small to take a 19mm i/d.

If I could find a long enough, 33mm+, spindle I'd make up 1mm thick wall spacers which would do the job...but most 17mm spindles are too short by 30-40mm I've found.....unless someone out there knows of anything that'd suit.
Trawling ebay for 17mm spindles and then asking for length dimensions is a pita, no one's interested it seems.

I've tried finding bearing with a 19mm i/d but the o/d isn't available it seems. I have a gsx spindle, the one I'd have turned down as most 17mm spindles are too short. I need 33mm+

Any ideas?

Its 20 mm not 19mm, that will expand your bearing search. whats the OD and depth of the stock bearings?

Hmmm...OK, I'll have to dig out the spindle and NSR bearings to double check the dimensions tomorrow.
Thanks for your input and interest...this just might get me back on track as it's been a bit of a blocker tbh. :)

Its a nominal 20mm, so the axle will actually measure like 19.7mm. I love trouble shooting wheel swaps. glad to help.

So, home stuff is coming to an end...and I've picked up on this project again.

Just forking about today....;)

I have new seals and dust covers, stripped the forks and the smell of the old oil reminded me of hypoid gearbox/diff oil...it's black too.

I wonder if someone 'upgraded' the forks by using hypoid 80/90 grade....an old skool trick on car lever arm shocks. Certainly not the light red/pink oil it should be?

A thorough cleanout and refill with shiny new Valvoline 10w should see them right.

I removed the thin black paint coating back down to the base metal, it's textured (casting marks) so I'll just give them a coat of paint, probably stainless steel colour to brighten them up or maybe grey?

Doc_rot - I will be checking wheel bearings at some point soon.

That's the forks done.

Before:

Thoroughly cleaned the insides with brake cleaner, the black crap that came out is not normal I rreckon.

Fresh seals and dust caps, all bolted back together and filled with Valvoline 10w Syn oil.

A quick squirt of stainless steel wheel paint (used it on many parts on my CBX project to very good effect) brought the legs up a treat, buffed the alloy bottom yoke and they look so much better, that'll do me.

After:

##

Headstock bearings next, fit the bar clamps and tidy the top yoke maybe with a top sticker/cover of some sort?

Minor update:

Not wanting to pay £16 ($20) for genuine CB200 tank forward mount rubbers, I came up with an alternative for £3 the pair.

Common white rubber door stops, trimmed down would do the job nicely :) They will be fixed in their new position using Rivnut fittings.

I chose white as the frame will be light grey and the tank white.

Even the moulded profile matches the metal mount which is a nice touch.

It's a small detail but very satisfying.

Headstock bearings and top yoke fitted next so I can see how close I can position the tank.

It looks like it'll work just fine....need a simple start button on the rightside now.

Love those buttons, nice and simple. They're a lot like the MotoGP buttons.
Thank you. Simple is the watchword on this build, or JEEP....Just Enough Equipment to Perform ;)

Did a little bit today, despite the heavy rain and having to sort my aircooled VW parts for a swapmeet tomorrow morning, I managed to mock the seat and align the tank.

Taking a step back to see the lines and hope it all flows.
1st attempt at a seat pad (I'll be 2-3 layering 15mm yoga mat) as I couldn't resist seeing what the blue/white would look like.....me likey.

Ypu were spot on Doc, 20mm it is. I'll have it turned down with a 20mm shoulder to hold the wheel adjuster and fit the swingarm jaw as it should. I'll also have a tophat spacer made for the nut end to be a spacer too.

Got a bit done:

Nearly finished insulating the roof of the garage...bloosy hard work and messy/dusty too.

Alloy levers arrived and fit....yay. They'll look smart with the grey grips and steel painted bars.

In readiness for the correct headstock taper bearings arriving, ordered the wrong one's..doh! ...I'm modifying the top yoke as well as making a coverplate out of alloy or stainless.

I want to have the front end in place and connected, so I can determine the ride stance/angle.....before ordering rear shocks and mounting the tank/seat in the correct horizontal. The seat unit will have to be raised about 1" all round to match the tank bottom line.

Here's some random images:

Now you see it...

now you don't.

Levers...

So some progress, although it seems painfully slow...

Thanks for checking in.

Well, that was worth the effort....contacting various ebay bike breakers to ask if they'd bother measuring their axle spindles....and bingo, had a positive reply that a Yamaha Diversion 600 spindle it actually 17x325mm so perfect with a 20mm o/d x 20mm long spacer/collar either end to allow the stock GS1100 fittings to remain stock.

My tame turner will knock up a couple of bobbin spacers as well to centre the wheel....should be job done I hope.

I've butchered the ignition barrel holder off the top yoke so either speedo will sit snugly in what's left which includes two threaded mounts which will come in handy........just need to decide which one?
