What did you build this week?

Yep, 1000's of 3/4 and 1/2" steel rods per week. This should free up a lot of time in the shop once it's up and running.
We do them all by hand on a disk sander at the moment.

Got the cutterheads made today, they will hold carbide isnserts

Cooked up this GT750 water pump gear. These plastic gears have a tendency to break, and since our 750 tends to really scream they like to break really often.

Wow.

There used to be an aluminum gear on the market a few years ago but I have no idea who manufactured them. Is that a full involute gear tooth I see there?

Yes, it is involute, I took the original gear and replicated it using a number of measurements and a fair amount of math. Then I drew it in CAD. I milled this top down, not a traditional hob style machining, so you'll notice the root of the teeth is circular rather than "flat" bottom. It's not perfect, but it should work. I used a .0625" end mill for the teeth, machine time for the teeth alone ended up being over 4 hours as the tool is so small that it moved like 1.5" per minute, and had very small step overs and depth of cut. I just let the machine run and went to bed. The rest of the machining was like minutes. So maybe 5 hours to make this, but I was asleep for the majority of it. Hopefully it works. If it does, I will make another one, and it will be better yet.

The cylinder head is next to hit the mill. My father almost has one of our two spares totally welded up. He's going to drop it off Saturday.

There is a press fit TDR/GT water pump (steel) gear from BDK that looks nice, but we didn't want to have to deal with the press fit because by the time we sent our water pump shaft to the UK, buy the gear, pay for return shipping, etc., it just didn't make sense to do it. I saw posts from the aluminum gear but it doesn't seem available anymore. We also wanted a gear that could be inspected, removed, replaced, like a stock gear. So here we are. Of course we did buy the high flow impeller and cover from BDK, they sent use the wrong stuff...

Awesome, I was going to ask if you milled it from the top. No broken endmills at that size?

I broke one 1/16” end mill, I bought three for the project. The root of the tooth is .07” D, so lots of radius engagement. I was running a little fast and the tool didn’t like it.

For those that aren't familiar with this GT750 project, this is what this water pump gear is going in. My father built this car 40 some years ago. Lot's of work to do on it yet... In the photo is my father, my son, and I, as well as some family friends on the right side/background.

I'm sorry for taking over this thread, so until I actually build another part for the car I won't post again. But here's some in car video from last year. The brakes were iffy as fuck, so I was babying it, also note how the tach drops out because the aforementioned water pump gear failed. We fought with the brakes, then the clutch, and I just never really got in the groove. Bad brakes on a street course as it turns out is really quite scary. I've lowered the lap record on this "track" four years running in a different car, so when we sort this car out, we are ready to rock and roll. We believe we can reset the all time lap record in this car. Also, at the 46 second mark if you see that greenhouse, that's where I got married haha. The tach drops out right after the 50 second mark.

I was going to show off the two boards I nailed together! But after Sonic built a machine and now savOr's water pump gear I'll pass.

Everybody is creative in their own way :p

So I'm gonna post this up...
A while back I asked for some spare sprockets anyone might have lying around. Ridesolo (Cory) offered up what he had, and a couple of weeks ago I collected them from him. The idea was to cut them up into an art project that could be displayed under the cover of the new deck.
This is what I started with from Cory (and a CB750 sprocket I added)

After a few hours of cutting/grinding/moving pieces around/ staring at it/repeat.

This morning I put some hideous welds on the back, and scuffed up the front with a flapwheel.

It'll now get a coat of clear and hung on the wall.

So that made this pop in my head. "
Prison yard stares and fleur-de-lis tattoos
Cannibals are saving all their bones for soup"

Good song by the hip
