Will do. I grabbed a Dyna ign and new coils and wires. Need to do timing belts again been 4 years. Also need to fix a damaged fender.

guess I don't follow the old wings that closely.. do they really need timing belts every 4 years?

They're interference engines. Usually five is about max if you plan to do some distance riding. It isn't hard, and they are pretty affordable from Amazon. Gates T274 $15.68 each (here in the USA).

Alright, since what I'm doing won;t be really exciting I'll just throw it up as a continuation on this thread. I got the shop sorted out and most of the honey do's finished up so I will be able to start getting the GL ready for the season. List of what I need to do along with some wants if time and $$ allow.

Needs:
Carb overhaul - all items bought for this from Randakks.
Timing belts - third time I'll be doing them on this girl and also got them from Randakks
oil & Coolant. - I hadn't done the oil yet and coolant is because you pull the rad for belts have all the stuff on shelves for this
Rear brake bleed and rear disk swap. - the brake stuck a bit over the season past and scored the disk. I have a good replacement and may need new pads and a rebuild kit.
Polish and shark hide valve covers, belt covers and some other bits
Simichrome pipes to get some minor pitting off?

Almost forgot, put on the new Hagons!

Wants:
Front fender swap to GL1000, or cut, trim change 1100 to make it better
Rear fender swapped back to 1000 or a new one made with new tail light etc to get rid of the huge one on now
new seat for when not touring. The touring seat is comfy but ugly as fuck. Looking at one of the Vietnam ones.

Here she is all jacked and ready for the work.

After spending a bit of time with one over the winter I have a newfound love for these old gl’s.

You’ll owe that bike jack one after the work’s done - she’s a hefty ol’ girl.

Hope you get the work done quick mate and ready for the thaw. I’m down in Ontario this weekend where they have no restrictions on when you can and can’t ride, unlike Quebec. It’s 12 degrees today and full sun, holy crap it’s biblically pleasant. One more reason for moving here ASAP

Ha, thanks. I'm planning to get a few hours a night on it and 2 full days on the weekend and should get it all knocked out. Worst case if I get a nice day I can hop on the scooter and ride LOL. And that jack has held her up on numerous occasions, It's perfect for if you need to play with the front or back wheels vs using the table.

So did just a little. Tried the simichrome and it's pretty good. I used the 0000 steel wool one one pipe with the worst pitting. It got the pits out but there is some swirling I need to polish out a bit more. The pipe with less damage came out much better.

After this Jill helped and we cleaned the shop and basement even more.

Looking good. Some wax might help delay the pits from blooming again. I can change belts (barely) without pulling the radiator, but it's not that much more work. I've seen some of the Vietnamese seats that look good. I like that they have upholstery options. Need to get my project '78 running so it can move to the back and let my show bike be brought out of hibernation.

Wait, what? Restrictions on when you can and can't ride? Tell me more sir.

Mike the GL's looking good get it done and ride southward!

In Quebec you can't ride between December 1st and mid March. In theory maybe you can if you have winter tires on your bike, but you'd have to be certifiable if you thought that was a good idea. The roads here are hazardous in the extreme with 4 wheels, let alone 2.

I don't know if it's different all over Ontario, but in Prince Edward County at least there is no such restriction I'm told. I saw a few bikes out last weekend, well jel.

Well that's garbage.
Some of my favorite rides are on a nice clear cold day in Jan!
When it's been 20F for a month and then you get one random day when it's 45 and it feels like summer!

It's only Le Bell Province that has that rule. I've ridden every month of the year some years, been times we get enough thaw and warmth on a sat I could take the bike for a ride.

Thanks Pid the Simichrome is a protector too and I'll rub some wax on as well. Need to see if I can get the swirls out from the steel wool. If I can't oh well they still look better than then rust did.

a few years back i want a little over 2 consecutive years of riding at least once every month. Once or two were on the last day of the month, feet down skating on ice haha.

I've started out 2020 set to do it again. Rode at least once in Jan. Feb. and March. so far

When I was able to do it I was a little further south than I am here and also in the city where the roads clear up sooner. Where I live now I won't get any windows to ride until last week of March or early April. So I have just enough time to get the bike all fixed up. Hoping to start pulling stuff off tonight in prep for the marathon carb clean over the weekend.

This is the seat I'm considering.

Really need to go back to the 1000 fender though to make it work. Also that is $300 USD after shipping and with the exchange right now that's $420 Canuck bucks and that's hard to swallow

I have leftover glass and resin from fixing the trailer, I may make a pan and try my hand again at a seat too, we'll see.

What if you cut down the foam on the one you have and find a decent upholstery guy?
