Maritime's new GL - 2UP Distance eater

Road about an hour today. Still noy right. I had to rum high beams and my Led lights to keep her at 14.5V while on 50 mph roads. Then when I hit the highway and cranked ot I could only do 95 and my volts dropped way down and I had to kill the hi beam and the leds just to keep volts at 12??? Anyway Ill sort it. Pic.

She looks great mate, really great - hope you catch the gremlin without it becoming too much of a pain in the ass.

Thanks guys. Goung to look up the issue and see whats out there. Ill doubke check all my coil and ignition wiring to make sure something didnt get bumped lose in the carb removal

Alright. Started at the basics. Pulled plugs to look at condition. Carb1,3,4 all golden brown. Carb 2 plug was like it came out of the package. So tested spark and its good. So good I zapped myself lol. So its fuel. I'm thinking a stuck float I dont want to pull the carbs again but I may have too dammit. Anyone else know why that carb may not be getting fuel?

OK, to add to what I did so far to diagnose. The carb in question #2 the plug was clean and had 0 fuel smell. I fired up the bike and did the spray water on the headers 1,3,4 all steamed off in less than a min. #2 never got hot after 2-3 of idle and reving. So shut down the bike and opened the float bowl drain on #2 and not a drop of fuel came out so I found my issue. the float is buggered somehow. I must have done something after putting the bowl on. I now need to figure out if I can pull the bowl without pulling the carbs back out. I don't think I can. Wonderful fun! at least I figure out the issue. What I thought was a carb sync needed was a dead cylinder.

Glad you found it! You had a pretty nice ride w/ it running like a 750, when it's back to being a 1000 again you'll really have a good time. Good luck w/ the fix!

Thanks. It's funny that the bike can run on 3 enough that I didn't really notice until I tried to go well above the speed limit and at a crazy acceleration rate LOL. Shit deal is I have to pull the carbs again which sucks. Some bikes you can pull the float bowls while carbs are in place but I don't think I can on the GL. The slightly off running I was feeling I was thinking was a carb sync issue and I was trying to find a carb sync to borrow.

Working from home has some advantages. I managed to use my lunch to pull the carbs out and fix the issue. I opened the offending carb and noticed the float wouldn't move. I had the needle valve 180 out. If in wrong they jam, I knew this and swear on my dumb dislexic brain I had checked them all 3 times before I buttoned up the bottoms and installed the carbs. That being said I swapped the valve, the float moves as it should and measures out the 21mm in the spec so fingers crossed all is good this time. I noticed something though as well. I cleaned the shit out of these things, Installed 2 inline filters but the gas still had some fine shit it in when I drained the bowls. I wonder if it was in the fuel pump already as I didn't take that apart.

Did you go with new lines, too? They can harbor crap stuck to them that drying out/wetting again can free up. Glad you found the offender. I may have a similar problem on my project bike. Pulling the carbs, after a certain number of times, gets to be just another task.

I thought I found it but I mounted them all back up only to find out it was still not getting fuel. that will learn me to bench test the bastards next time. So I'll spend lunch today re-pulling the carbs and figuring out what is wrong with that particular float needle setup.

on the charging issue make sure your stator to regulator connector is not getting hot and burning up as it gets hot the resistance increases

i usually cut the connector out and put in heavier terminals more suited to teh amp[erage

Is that the 3 yellow wire one? I have that soldered and shrink wrapped.

Damn Mike that blows. Not to use your situation as any kind of cautionary tale (well maybe just a little bit) but what exactly do you mean by "bench test"? Is there a way to check fuel flow etc before you install the carbs?

Yep. Connect fuel line to a bottle and see if the bowls fill. Usually with like Isopropal so you don't get gas everywhere.
