Shake the Box CL360/378 - The Hedgehog - Done

Mounting brackets done. I'll take 'em back off, squirt some paint, and they should be ready to bolt on. Spoze I'm going at it differently than someone who welds but I think it'll work. The final assembly will get some thread lock and then I'll hope it doesn't vibrate apart.

I started out the morning w/ a text to @Hurco550 telling him I was pretty nervous about trying to do up my Venhill clutch and throttle cable kits. I really wasn't sure about trying to solder cable ends. I don't have a solder pot and don't have the need to invest in one. I had read that you shouldn't use a torch because of the possibility of making the cable brittle. I had considered getting everything set up and then calling the local cycle shop to see if he's got a solder pot.

I did some YouTube trolling and the whole thing didn't seem too difficult so I decided to make my own. I put an old bolt into the vice and used some JB Weld to attach a 1/2" diameter copper pipe cap to the head of it. It ain't pretty. I put a bunch of silver solder into the pipe cap and then set the torch to it. Honestly, I was surprised how quickly it melted! I prepared the cable and end per instructions with the cable flared out and lots of flux. I heated up the solder again, dipped the end and cable into it for a few moments and that was it. Amazingly easy and good results. Now I've got to tackle the throttle cables. Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks?

Late this afternoon the last coats of matte clear went onto the tank (I think... I may look at it in the morning and opt for a couple more coats.). Get the cables done and installed then I'll put the fairing on and see about a couple pictures of the wee beastie.

Thanx! That's exactly why I posted it here. I figure that a "Hey, this ain't so hard, don't be intimidated and give it a try" might help somebody else.
 
Interesting... I was just looking back through this (VERY) old thread and according to post #15 made by me in Feb 2015 I'm AHEAD of schedule on this project! Back then I said: "Hmm, maybe I'll have a roller in six years?????" It hasn't been six years yet. I started this silly thread back in January 2014 and actually started messing with it long before then. Sad, sad, sad... Damn, gotta get this thing done!

Good advice. My problem is that I usually aim so high that the bullet eventually comes straight back down and hits my foot!
 
No pix this time, but in spite of having three days of largely working in the melon patch I have managed to get some things done. We've had some a few different household things going that included having both of us spending HOURS searching for a new kitchen sink, of all things. Long story, but the sink has to be replaced and the replacement size we need cannot be bought off the shelf. Got some quotes to have one made and one of them was over $1500 for a SS kitchen sink. Nope, didn't order from them for sure! Then much of today was spent replacing 40 kitchen cabinet drawer & door knobs! Anyway, back to the Honaki.

On Friday I got the clutch cable fitted and then Saturday I got the throttle cables done and plumbed in. It's amazing how well the cables work when they are the correct length! The Venhill cable housings have Teflon linings and are really smooth. After getting everything done I pulled the original clutch cable out of it's housing and discovered a few broken strands. I'm sure glad those have been replaced, there's never a good time for a clutch cable to break!

On Sunday I decided I was not going to put up w/ some detail problems w/ the little fairing that had been bugging me. I put a fresh blade into an Exacto knife and each little rivet sticker was removed and then the other stickers that couldn't be replaced were masked. I gave it all a light sanding and then re-shot the paint.

This evening I got new replacement rivets laid down and I'll be able to shoot on the clear when the humidity drops. Onward!!!!

I was able to get the clear on the fairing this afternoon. I'll decide tomorrow if it needs more coats or if it's done.

I got the wiring added in for the digital volt meter/USB charge port. It's a nice little unit, the port puts out the proper (*See EDIT below.) voltage for device power & charging and the voltage read-out can be seen even when the protective cap is closed. I've had it for a while but couldn't decide where to mount it. Under the windshield in front of the dashboard seemed logical.

EDIT: Turns out it isn't that accurate! Comparing it's readout w/ my VOM and other meters it seems to be about .5v low.

Wow. I like that all except the blue will be blinding at night. If you never plan riding it after dark, Wow!

I would have preferred red, but that's the color the Danmoto comes with. It would be nice if there were some kind of dimmer function on it. The dashboard is bright, but the neutral light and flasher lights are even brighter. When I got the voltmeter/USB I was able to pick the color and was glad that blue was one of the options. The chances of me riding it at night are pretty slim, but who knows, there may be an occasional trip home from Levi's place.

Well on 30 I could wind it out and let 'er roll, but on 19 I'd be able to enjoy the sport of dodging deer... decisions, decisions.
 
Seems like it's time for a bit of an unveiling. Somewhere along the strange and twisting journey of this build I came upon a picture of a USAF A-10 Thunderbolt II. I saw many of these during my years on active duty and though relatively slow and certainly not even close to being pretty, the "Warthog" is loved by the crews for it's "bring 'em back alive" reputation. It's respected and feared by by those on the wrong end of it's 30mm rotary gun; few escape the "flying tank."

That picture gave me the idea to loosly model my little build after the Warthog. So, though it's not complete yet and is still waiting on the seat, a start-up, and some other details, here are a few preliminary pictures. It doesn't quite measure up to being a Warthog so we'll just call it the Hedgehog.

I couldn't find a place to put a 30mm rotary gun so I'll do without that, I guess
