Wow what a huge improvement! That's amazing. I gotta ask:

1. Did you figure out what caused your orange peel to begin with? and did you get it throughout or just some parts of the job like me?

2. How many coats did you have on?
Because I'm super paranoid of sanding too much or through the clear.

3.what was your sanding technique like?

No, unfortunately I'm not really sure why it turned out that way. Wish I knew so I could correct it for next time. As for coats there is probably 4-5 on each part. It can be a bet stressful when sanding, hard to know how far you can take it.

I started with 1000 grit to knock down the high spots and then moved onto 2000 to remove the 1000 scratches and then polished it until the shine was back. Here are a few pictures I took of each step when doing the fender.

Polish partially done, shine is coming back but still some scratches visible from the 2000 sandpaper.

Just light sanding, I used a semi-rigid foam block, but it really depends on what type of part you are sanding. If I had any hard edges and such I wouldn't have used the block around them or took it very careful.

It can be stressful but all part of the fun and a good learning experience. :)
 
That is some awesome looking work you got there HerrDeacon. I can see my reflection in that fender.
 
Here is my fuel tank right after clear coat.

Process was:

2K epoxy primer (colormatic)
Filler (u-pol fantastic)
2K epoxy primer
1k high build primer
Painted the gold base coat (color match for a '70 chevelle ss in champagne gold)
Masked (badly)
Painted the black base coat (BMW Schwartz II)
Put the badges on
2 cans of spray max 2K

I have some dust spots and other imperfections, that I hope to sand and polish out when it's cured. Also made a mark in the base coat on the opposite side when masking, but didn't have any more paint to fix it with.

Wow, tank looks great! I like the gold. I had a hard time finding a decent gold locally when I did my MB5. Yours looks like a nicer one than the one I used.

Thanks! I found a supplier that could fill cans with car paint and gave them the paint code for the car I liked. This is the label of the can for reference if anyone else could use it

Beautiful work! Orange peel free? What is your process of applying 2 cans of 2k clear and not getting orange peel?

I'm still a little bitter that 1/2 my tank has orange peel and I have no clue what i did wrong compared to the other half. Lol

It looked pretty fee from orange peel, but lets see how it looks after it’s cured. I’m not coming by the garage until Tuesday so won’t know for sure until then. I sprayed a light coat to begin, then just continued laying on coats. I also sprayed a control piece next to the tank and as soon as I could feel it wasn’t very sticky anymore I did the next coat. Ended up with about 10min between.

Interesting. I was thinking you had to apply new coats while the previous was still sticky. Maybe that was my wrongdoing.

I did speak to a painter I know. He said expecting a rattle an job to be fully free from orange peel was a miracle. Lol

If I did anything right, it was probably just pure luck/miracle :)

where he mentions the sticky test.
 
I actually did end up having quite a bit of orange peel on the black part of the tank. Sanded it out with 2000 and 3000 grit, then used Meguiars Ultimate Compound on the Meguiar's DA drill thingy that was recommended by trek97 here: https://www.dotheton.com/index.php?threads/400four-dueling-banjos.77097/page-14

I first tried it on a weak Bosch PSR 18 cordless and it did pretty much nothing, then threw it on a corded drill and it worked really well.

Yeah the more I read the more I realize orange peel is the norm for spray can clear not an exception.

How many coats did you say you put on? I think I did 4 and a bit paranoid of sanding through.

I kind of lost count, but with two cans I figure 4-5.

I actually sanded quite a bit in a few places, as I had a dimple in the coat one place and a bit of dust in another, but didn’t go through the clear.
