DTT BOTM WINNER
In the middle of nowhere Arkansas. Local auction company that was unorganized as hell, didn't advertise anywhere but on FB Marketplace. One good thing there. Guy ended up outbidding me by a hair on it. 74 Duc DM750. Guy stole that thing at $9K. Not a common bike around here. Will likely see it at Mecum next year.

I did manage to snag another old outboard to hang on the wall. Rarely come across them that don't have the alloy fuel tank dented to hell.

I dunno, I'm not sure he STOLE it at that price. It looks like a modified GT and would be an expensive bike to rebuild let alone restore. I've been out of the market for a while though so maybe I'm out of touch. If you just want a hot rod roundcase I guess it'd be cheaper than a Sport, but that's not saying much. Hot rodding a roundcase is not a cheap proposition.

I spent around $5k on engine parts alone for mine and that was about 15 years ago? I sold the bike a few years later when I realized I spent more time thinking about what I could do with the money it would bring than I did just enjoying the ride.

The engine had already been gone through. Guy died in the middle of restoring it. Had pretty well everything there for it to boot.

Hammer down on one last year was $55K. Even another $10-$15K in it, you'll come out alright.

$55k? For a nice Sport, sure. But that's not a Sport, it's a GT. Sports are worth roughly twice what GTs are in stock form. Modified? Who knows what it would bring but who in their right mind would pay Sport prices for an owner modified GT?

If the engine was done and all the major parts to finish it were there it'd be a decent entry into a roundcase for sure. It'll be a fun bike for whoever bought it and if he's doing the work himself he probably saved some money, but it will never be more than a modified GT. Which is fine! Just not $55k fine. Not in this decade anyway. I think $9k was probably a fair price, but then I didn't see the bike in the flesh. And the fact a roundcase in that condition is worth $9k is why I don't play with roundcases anymore. I'm glad I had one but the bang isn't worth the buck to me anymore.

Blatant curiosity, what says GT over Sport to you?

I don't know these bikes.

But, the Vin on the engine and frame are DM750-S according to vin registries.

The rear shock mounts give it away as a GT. Sports (except for the early frames) have a different type of shock mount and the frames have a narrower tail section. If it were a '74 Sport, the top mount of the shock would look like it was mounted to the side of the frame, not enclosed in the frame like on that bike. The '72 Sport did have that type of mount, but the tank and fenders are also from a GT and the engine sidecovers would be black if they were from a '72. Yes all that stuff could have been changed but the serial number would have shown the frame as earlier than 1974.

The top triple clamp seems to have bolt holes for bar mounts too. I'm pretty sure the Sports had smooth top triples, but wouldn't bet my life on it.

750 GTs had DM750S on the frame. Here's a picture of my GT's frame;

I've forgotten the explanation for that and can't find it in a quick look through a couple books. I seem to recall it was a homologation code, both Sports and GTs were homologated under the same number or something like that.

I don't know about the engine stampings though, I don't remember what was stamped on mine and don't have any photos that I know of.

Bevel Heaven has a list of roundcase numbers if you're curious.

Good to know. Probably a good thing I didn't end up with it. Would have been in well over my head.
