Jerry's Follies

I like that look of that rear fender, can I ask where you sourced it from?
Here is a screenshot. I got it on Ebay. ebayscrnd.jpg

Hello
Check this light closer: it is quite wide and chunky.
I was considering to buy it, but made a mockup and went with this:

But still seeking someting smaller :)
There is some pretty cool stuff on Ebay, my mess-up was buying a cool tail-light that is going to look stupid on a bobbed fender. I didn't really think it through. I'm thinking on looking into doing a "Harley 2007 Nightster" thing, where they have two taillights where the turn-signals would go, doubling as brake lights (like a car), but that still leaves the license plate. I know they have side mount, but IDK if I really want to go that way. I'll figure it out when I get there, which is 'way off.

..these are quite nice little bullet lights made from metal. I ordered some for one of my bicycle projects.

Hey, Jerry, I was wondering if you could post the outside diameter on the frame mounting tabs for that fender, I really like it but don't want to order one up until I have an idea of how it would fit my bikes frame.. I really appreciate it man, sry to be a pain in the ass lol

like, how wide the fender is at the mount tabs/holes? I'll check and post when I get home. If it helps at all, it's set up as a traditional Harley Fender, which on the old bikes were 130mm section width tires. This picture is from the ad...

...it pains me to know that I have to mess it up, trying to paint it red. I tend to make things worse, not better!

So... my idea for this fender is to try and butcher an original SR250 front fender for it's mounting tabs and use that to match up to this fender.

I bought two of them, so that if I really had to, I could attempt to use it as a rear fender also, if the bobtail one doesn't wok right.

Does anyone have experience or input on whether aftermarket footpegs can be used on a SR250? When I had a Sportster, it was easy to figure out.

Check out the post on that in my thread if you haven't already.

It involves some cutting and grinding but can be done.

Edit: added link

SR250 footpeg swap

Cool. Thank you. I know some manufacturers make "Metric Bikes" parts but footpegs are pretty specialized, Brand-To Brand. I'll check it out.

So,... one of the many cautionary "Ooops! Don't do this!" learning lessons that are sure to flow from my experience.....

(surely there will be more)

Don't use wheel-cleaner spray on the engine. What has resulted is a sort of "Aluminum Grey/Silver Camo" finish.
It appears I'll be pulling the motor to paint the cases.

On the brighter side*, I finally got to mess with the fork sliders and swingarm position to set my target ride heights, and it's going to work! No issues with the chain, header/exhaust positioning, etc. Shoutout to Jadus for the awesome side-on pix he's posted.... they allowed me to "test-fit" my ideas in MS Paint with remarkable accuracy!

*horrific unintentional pun

Unrelated, but related.... I see that DO THE TON has an app for I-fone but not Android? Is there any recommendations for an app that I can use to post the pix from my phone to this website?

Also, I received my donor front fender for cheap from ebay. Seems like almost sacrilege to butcher it for the mount... it's going to be painful!
I want to use it to mount THIS in its place.

I use Tapatalk on Android to post photos quite often. Example:

You can use photos from memory (they call it Gallery) - even has its own gallery of recent photos, or you can choose several other source options. I use it from tablet most often, but it works on my Motorola phone just fine, also. DTT has Tapatalk code, so the forum views nicely on it, too.

Hello
It might be hard use that exact tip over the pond ;) but searching for a rear fender for SR250 i have stumbele this picture:
704578f14145ba03d34e2d42c99b

It is a front fender from polish tractor Ursus c330 - full thick metal, 16" wheel :)
Now I am trying to find it locally to measure the dimensions.

I can relate to that: one step forward, on step to the side :D

That tractor fender looks a lot like an old car spare tire cover from the 1930s. The spare tire covers are pretty thin but are about 5" wide. They were sometimes used on Harley & Indian bobbers in the 30s-40s. One spare tire cover can easily make two motorcycle fenders.

Gonna stick with the old pegs. "If it ain't broke..."

Dumb question: If or When one drops the engine, does the rear swingarm have to come off too, or can it remain in place? (Slide big bolt out/ drop motor/ slide big bolt back in.) I've never done it before.

The reason for asking is, I plan on "hardtailing" it, but I think I'm correct in assuming that once I lock/weld the swingarm into place, that big bolt should still slide out to remove/replace the motor. I plan on welding and boxing it in with the engine in place, so that everything is lined up, beforehand.

So, for the "Ground-Up-Reimagining" builds that many in and outside of D.T.T, clones of popular motorcycle engines have been a Godsend. But so far, they've been mainly clones/adaptations of the Honda horizontal single, the Honda CG125 mid-cam, or the Suzuki TUX 250 motor, the Virago 250... I haven't seen any clones of the Suzuki SV650 motor for sale, but I'm pretty sure they exist. All decent motors, and available through Ebay, etc.
My main lament was that none of the Classics, like the XS650, the CB350s, (insert your favorite orphan motor here) have been available, for whatever reason. And then THIS pops up! This will pretty much enable ANYone to play as Eric Buell or whoever was behind the XR750, etc.
No clue as to when or how much, but these would be excellent bases for our projects. (I'm still holding out for my Fave, the Suzuki LS650), but at this point, we shouldn't be choosy.

...for the record, I have been a Sportster Fan, but not generally an H-D Fan. I bought a brand-new 883 Sporty because none of the Japanese dealers would finance me, but H-D did. The bike served as my daily, AZ-CO car, and ran with NO hiccups until I sold it (5 years, 44000 miles, 3rd set of tires), later.

This is good news, and I anxiously await my LS650 Clone, Shineray! :)

It's been a while since I've added any of my usual drivel to this thread, so here is an update:

Have cleaned/cut/measured the plates and tubing for the hard-tail conversion- I have actual time off next week, so I am hoping to at least get the rear end/fender/seat area done so that I can concentrate on seeing if it has LIFE in it or not. One UGLY little discovery was that the CDI/igniter unit had water in it- even though the bike has been shed-kept since I got it almost a year ago...? Sure hope I don't have to buy one of those.

Encouraging news is, my wife and I might make The Great Pilgrimage to North Dallas/Ft Worth Area, which means, IF I get this contraption roadworthy, I'll be in one of the best places on Earth to ride it. I am psyched. Baby Steps...

Okay- gotta own this one. Found the shiny new valve-tappet covers on Ebay for cheap. Ordered two, so that I would have enough. Forgot that the intake and exhaust covers are different. (WHY, Yamaha?!?) ...ended up buying the equivalent of two left shoes. *DOH!*
