V Star 650

Starting to join the upper and lower halves. Not my favorite part but things are matching up okay. Tunnel will be trimmed to match the upper profile in front.

Just about ready to close it up. It often becomes a game of just one more spot to raise or lower but I think I'm to the point where primer should smooth out the rest.

Getting ready to build the last big piece of bodywork, the rear fairing. I originally thought I'd go with the profile with the dashed line but now I'm liking the solid line more. Looking for your preference; dashed or solid line?

I'm going with a subtle swoop at the tail. Here's a profile with some photoshop and pencil sketch added.

Starting to take shape. I made the top profile and the side profile in full scale on the bike and developed the stations on paper. I only drew the end view so it needed a little fairing once I built up all the stations but I think I was close enough that a little trimming of a few stations brought it into shape.

Just stumbled onto your progress here. Your tool selection is phenomenal and obviously you have the skillset to match. I am way late chiming in but I prefer the swoop at the back as well. The only thought I could offer is do you need/want the fender to be that big in the back? Just kind of looking at it proportionately with the rest, don't know if you planned on a front fender etc. What does the rear travel mandate? That's all I got, wish I had what it takes to work metal like that. Keep up the good work!

this thing is wield!
Thanks for looking.

The rear suspension travel is only about 3 inches but I want the profile of the rear fender that high just for the looks. I agree I don't want the rear fender to be out of proportion with the front wheel but I want the up and down curves from the tank to the seat the rear fender. No fender planned for the front. That's one unfortunate feature of the trailing link design, a close fitting fender connected to the links or axle will rock back and forth with suspension travel, almost 40 degrees full travel.

Taking a slight detour to recover the seat that came off the VStart650 Custom donor bike. Can anyone tell if that's a Corbin seat that I started with. It looks like other ones that I've found on ebay but there was no label anywhere.

Finally getting back to build season. And finally got the nerve to drill and tack the threaded sockets that will mount the body work.

Located the holes with a thin template and then bored out the holes with a hole saw. Made a temporary bracket to set the correct hole spacing to allow access for tacking into place. Sockets are just tacked for now, the full weld will come when I strip the frame down for powder coating. Last pics show the bracket the bodywork will be welded to.

We have our Visions of what our finished products are going to be, so stay true to it! Great job!

(MY "Vision" of my project just happens to look like something from Fat Albert's junkyard.)

Getting ready to dive in on this. For sure the largest piece I've attempted. Not sure this is a good time to switch alloys but I'm going to give it a go. I've been using 5052 and switching to 3003

Similar in shape to the tank, I'm starting with the center strip as the first piece.

That is gonna look awesome. Are you going to do a similar front fender?

I'm going to leave it bare. One problem with the trailing link front suspension is that if I fix the fender to the axle to keep a close fit it will rock back and forth with the links almost a 45 degree swing! I perhaps could have let a fender pivot on the axle and stabilized with a link to the fork but I didn't plan the bushings required on the axle to do that. So I will go without. And I like the sweep in the spokes, I don't want to hide that.
