‘65 Triumph T120R Bobber - “Ticket To Ride”

Guess I don't hang in the right places or with the right people. No free motorcycles come my way. Bummer. Nice get!
I wouldn't have gotten it if the guy that it was offered to wasn't 100% out of garage space and already had 2 motorcycles in the house. Wife wasn't going for it.

That ignition mount is pretty cool. Any chance you'd be willing to print out another one of those Pazon mounts? I'm putting a Pazon in my commando. Pm me if so, I'll give you what you need for one.

Sure, no sweat at all.

Not much to report on, I got the wiring all completed, the brakes are all plumbed up. I’m waiting on new tappet guides and clutch rod. The clutch rod we fished out of my buddy’s hoard is from a 500 or a bsa as it’s about a 1/2” short. I did get the rings replaced with a new set of Hastings rings. I have the rocker boxes built and they are ready to go on with the head. The carbs are all ready to roll. When I get everything g mounted up. Still need to build the fuel lines. Oh well, should have everything this week and can get onto wrapping it up in the next week-ish. But in the meantime... I thought I needed at least something gold on the back end so I whipped up a decal for the caliper.

Top end is assembled now. I couldn’t resist a test fit of the exhaust before calling it a night.

Ha excellent! That is going to sound mean.
Have you looked at using "lollipop" baffles? Supposedly best used at 45° to the flow of the gas. Just a washer with a thread on it. Used to chop up the exhaust pulse at the end of the pipe to stop it reverberating.

Yep I'm familiar, we'll see.. these bikes are very tolerant of straight pipes. I'm not super keen on drilling my pipes. It'll not be any louder than my 124" Road Glide. My old straight pipe'd XS 650 was tolerable. Sounded like a small tractor.

Carbs are mounted and my throttle cables ran. I’m using a 1-2 throttle cable. I really did not care for the dual cable setup on my old ‘69 Bonnie. I’m going out to my buddy’s place after dinner to make my fuel lines. He’s got the right crimped and stuff. Getting close now. May get to fire it up this weekend. Need to make a punch list so that I don’t for get anything.

Wow, very nice.
What kind of tube did you use?

Not sure what it is. My buddy sourced it. Supposed to stay flexible and not yellow. Says “superthane” on it. He’s had it on his ‘67 for a couple of years and it’s looking great.

Looks like it's a polyurethane based hose for fuel and oil. The crimps look great.

Almost there... I managed to get it started today. It’s pumping oil, so no worries there and it sure sounded angry with these straight pipes. I foresee a heat shield of some kind in my future I was working in shorts and that pipe set got hot quick. Pretty much spot on 3 months start to finish for this build. Will wrap up this week and I’ll get some running vid and outdoor pics soon.

Spent some time getting the bike running well. After several set backs (leaky Petcock, very un-cooperative throttle cables, me forgetting to connect a coil - oops) finally got it running well with the help of George and a Grok Harmonizer to balance the carbs and set air/fuel mix.

That’s the good. Now the bad. In classic British bike form. I have a few oil leaks to chase down.
Oil feed tube = easy fix with a clamp.
Outer gearbox cover = easy fix with fresh gasket (I was pretty hard on this one with it coming off and on a whole lot)
Primary = this one is gonna be a pain in the ass. Primary “should” be dry as I’m running a belt drive. And never put any oil in it but the thing is leaking oil. So either it’s leaking at the main bearing seal or behind the clutch basket. I’m running SAE30 in both holes so no color indicator. But the cover has to come off anyway as this cover is just for setting timing as it has an inspection cover. The correct '65 cover is solid save for the clutch adjuster inspection plug. That, along with clutch, stator/rotor, and drive pulley have to come off. I'll start on that this afternoon after work hours. I’ll have to do this before anything else, it's too much to ignore just to get a ride in.

A bit of an unexpected set back, but the bike is going to run well and sounds crazy good and no leaks in the top end.

More to come as I attack the primary side.

Hey Nate, I just read your thread this morning. To get this project done in three years would be a credit to you, but three months is phenomenal! Doing your own engineering design, programming, 3D printing, machining, welding, powder coating, plating, painting, crank balancing, vapor blasting, and more is just pretty amazing. Of course, it doesn't hurt to know guys like Geo, Aaron, Dave, and John. Well done, and I know you will have your startup issues resolved pretty quickly too.
