1975 CB125 Tracker project

OK, so after checking the tracking on the coil and it not arriving now until at least Dec 30th I want to test fire the bike so we can strip it all the way down for cleaning and modding. It occurs to me that we have access to 12V coils and batteries so why don't I wire up a total loss ign? Engine doesn't care if the spark is from 6V or 12V and neither does the points. so I will grab an old GL coil and the Scooter 12V battery and wire them to the points and give her a try tonight after checking valves and timing are in spec. As long as we don't put 12V through the harness it shouldn't hurt anything and we'll know if the engine needs to be stripped or if we can leave it in one piece.

You might need to ground one of the GL coil outputs to the engine since it won't be firing through a plug on the other side.

Right, I was wondering that. I could use the Scooter coil maybe if that is easy to get at. I can't remember and not sure a 2T coil has different specs than a 4T?

As simple system as you are setting up it shouldn't matter. I think the GL coil should work fine. If nothing else, pop a plug in the off-cylinder boot and ground its body (would be a good indicator that you are getting spark).

Well I hunted and hunted and could not find my old GL coils. I know I kept them as they had new plug caps and still functioned but WTF I put them IDK. Now I need to see if the Scooter coil will work for the test or if I need to pull a coil off the GL.

The GL coils (on mine) are buried so deep that I dread working on them. Rip a coil from an old junk car or truck? The CB125 is just kick, isn't it?

This setup gave me a nice fat blue spark on the grounded plug. So I will assume it does on the other. Now to setup a temp fuel source and remount the carb.

It runs, and I even forgot to set the pilot circuit LOL. Got video. 4 kicks is all it took! Revs started climbing as it warmed and we got one good backfire out of the carb but no airbox and pilot not set accounts for that. Now to figure out how to load the vid on youtube.

Yep. Im off from now till Jan 4th so a few hours a day and we should make some good progress.
As long as it doesn't take it all to get the Dyna back in! Awesomeness! That is going to make a great little scoot. Enjoy your wrenching time.

More rust. It's getting cleaner with every round. Petcock looks like someone stuffed it full of caramel. And started on the paint stripping. Original blue was way nicer than the shitty black rattle job. Will wants blue, and he thinks a satin not gloss.
