I should have a side cover rod

What happens is there is a ring in there with 3 bearing balls in it. The ring rotates when you pull the clutch, and the balls get forced up a ramp to force the pushrod in. If the resting point is halfway up the ramp...when you pull the lever, they move past the end of the ramp and get stuck...

Agree on the skipping 2D part. Unless you can get a free version of some 2D CAD, start with 3D. If you're going to invest time and money into it, might as well start with your goal. You can always do 2D with something like Solidworks. Then, when you're ready, the jump into 3D is right there...

A friend of mine has a brother in law that "builds" bikes. IE he swaps the front end with parts from a catalog. This is about the only style he makes.
