I finally got the seat back from the upholstry place. He did a really good job and charged me a really fair price. While I was waiting for the seat to be done I replaced the passenger pegs and made a new taillight set up.
Haha I think the reason I'm so cost conscious on this one is because I have kept a running tab the entire time, rather than going by the "hide the receipts in a drawer" method.
Thanks guys. Ya, there is always that voice in my head that wants to spend all my money on making it look a certain way, but cost and retaining stock-ness are large factors here.
Couple updates but nothing too crazy. Still no seat yet. I swapped out the stock turn signal lenses for clears. I also replaced the enormous stock tail light and holder for something a little smaller.
Thank you. I actually prefer to use the rustoleum brand because I have had the best luck with that. Even though it's Bed liner you should still do all the necessary prep work that you would regular paint. I just made sure to get even coverage on the first coat then hit it with a touch up second...
Thanks. I actually was looking to replace a cracked blinker lens and I can across some clear ones. I think they will complement the black better so I ordered them. I also and reworking the taillight to something less bulky. I will update with pictures soon.
Ha I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not, but I found out the hard way in the past. If you got leaky seals just get them over with while they are pulled!
Couple more photos. You will also notice I got rid of the gray grips for black because even though they were brand new, they looked like crap from grabbing them with dirty hands.
Finished product sans the seat which is still at the upholstery shop. After this photo was taken I ended up ripping the rear wheel and brake set up off to do a little more cleaning cuz I was bored.
Beginning to end on the tank. Pretty much the same process on the side covers minus the paint stripping. A light sanding did the trick on the plastic. I also just cleaned the badges with some wd 40 because they have a cool worn look to them.
I decided I wanted to go ahead and paint it. I had been debating getting all the tins done professionally , but got too many quotes that were more than what I paid for the bike. I watched a few videos online of people rattle-canning tins with pretty good results but I also decided against...
As you can see in the pictures I also painted the headlight housing and relocated the blinkers to the side of it. I was pretty pumped that worked out because I was not thrilled about drilling into my brand new headlight ears. The gauges, gauge housings, and the brackets all got re sprayed as well.
I went crazy cleaning everything on the front end. I did not like the look of the fixed brake line although it functioned fine. So I stripped the caliper and pained it and also replaced the bottom brake line. I soaked and cleaned all the other pieces as well. I debated whether or not to ditch...
Ha thanks dude I appreciate it. Unfortunately the FJ is my old man's. My work space is actually an old used car dealership, hence the windows in the showroom.
After I pulled the forks off I discovered they were in dire need of some new seals. I put the new seals in and polished them up. In the picture below you can see a before and after of them.
