I have done some breaking in on the rebuilt motor now and put about 20 miles on it. The bike is running but not idling great and now much power or ability to rev under load. A warm check on compression give 135 psi L and 125 R. question I have is: should I continue to try to break it in and...
Put it back together last 2 nights and fired it up this morning. Seems to be running fine after a float height correction. I was thrilled to hear that. I'll take it through the paces for a proper break in and report back any issues. Thanks to the guys posting and helping me with this...
My cylinders are back from the shop after being bored 0.5 mm oversized. Can I use a standard head gasket or do I need something else? I see some oversized 3mm offered for sale.
Ok never mind I think I may have figured this out. Looks like it runs from the kill switch to the coils. Maybe the shop manual I have covers the older CB/CL 350, but I was able to find another wiring diagram online with the bk/w.
Hi Friends, I could use some help. I am trying to re make the connections and sort out the wiring on a '71 CL350 which I had to replace the handlebars. There is a black wire with white stripe coming into the headlight from the right side switches (kill switch side) and also one coming from the...
Re: Rachels 78 CB400A...generic re-fresh
That is interesting. I'm coming at this from theory rather than experience as I never tried this. Could very well be the xylene helps wintergreen soak in. Natural plasticizers could be just as good as artificial ones. Nature is after all the best...
Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel
I was reading this thread for the 1st time. My 1st bike was a 750 hondamatic and my second was a cm400t so this is neat.
I do want to weigh in on that xylene discussion since I am a chemist. It's not going to dissolve your parts, but I would not use it and here is...
Super excited the new pistons came in and the jugs are headed to the shop today for overboring and honing! The moment of truth is coming for this rebuild. I was wondering if anyone can offer info on what to expect from compression right off the bat and the how can I expect it to rise as the...
I flipped the motor upside down and rested the case on a paint can to do some cleaning. Nothing fancy but it kept the stress off the studs. The whole underside had the brown grime coating. Got the majority of it off and it's looking much better. Not as good maybe as you guys with your solvent...
While waiting for the pistons to come I pulled the side covers off the cases and replaced the oil seals and gaskets. For each seal I drilled a tiny hole in the side and put a wood screw in just slightly, making sure of course not to go too far in or go anywhere near the seal interface. Then I...
High school? Wow I would have given my left locknut for a 550 at 16.
Don't know what you have done so far but I would start by identifying each loose part - the shop manual with diagrams will help. Any that you can't ID, just post photos here and folks can help.
A critical step with a...
Thanks to themotoworks for your suggestion. I've ordered from mcmaster for stuff before. After reading carefully on some other posts, the 2nd stem seal o ring "cushion" should not be needed with the ones I have ordered. I found #11 seals mentioned on partsfish and have some on the way, but...
Ok I found the exploded diagram for the valves in the shop manual. Looks like only the exhaust valves are supposed to have seals. I have ordered 2 seals but cannot find the o-ring cushion that sits underneath it (#8 in diagram). Wonder if I can get away without it? The old ones are no good...
I did my valves this evening and I think it went well. The seats came nice and clean. I made sure to clean off all the grinding compound off (I don't need any liquid sandpaper eating up the valve guides or cylinders). It's not as easy as it looks to use the lapping tool. Kept having re...
I'm having trouble finding air filters for the CL175K6. Anyone know of any source offering them? If not I will attempt to rebuild the old ones with new paper. I saw a few threads on this subject but can anyone refer me to where I can buy the bulk filter paper and what product is good...
A local shop I called can do a 0.5 mm overbore for about $80. Thats not too bad, I would say its within the budget. Hopefully 0.5 mm over would be enough to clean up the bores pretty good?
