‘65 Triumph T120R Bobber - “Ticket To Ride”

Hey Nate, I just read your thread this morning. To get this project done in three years would be a credit to you, but three months is phenomenal! Doing your own engineering design, programming, 3D printing, machining, welding, powder coating, plating, painting, crank balancing, vapor blasting, and more is just pretty amazing. Of course, it doesn't hurt to know guys like Geo, Aaron, Dave, and John. Well done, and I know you will have your startup issues resolved pretty quickly too.

Thanks for popping in Ray, George tells me you are doing well all things considered with this Covid-19 mess. I ask about you. I’ve learned a good bit from you too. You’ll have social distance your way down one day soon and see her in person. I’ll get these bug-a-boos squashed one way or another.

I made an attempt to squash my leaks. Doesn’t look like my main bearing seal is the culprit. I cleaned it out really well in the primary with some brake parts cleaner and got al nice and dry. Then ran the thing and got it warmed up checked for where it might have leaked from. Nothing... cooled it down... repeated again nothing. Unless building up oil pressure caused any leak I had to seal up I’ve no idea what was up.

Not up for test riding tonight. May pull it out tomorrow and see if it goes down the road. Need to get to the DMV and register it as well.

Maybe a dumb question, but is the garter spring side of the crank seal pointed toward the crankcase? That would seem like the way to go since you have a dry primary.

Yes garter spring is where the oil is.

I actually think I sorted out the immediate mechanical bugs today. I’m sure I’ll find something else once I ride it and really start the shake down. Electrically, it seems to be doing well except for my speedo. When the bike is running, the odometer lcd freaks out. I’m going make or source a small inline 12v regulator and see if that straightens it out. My single phase, high output stator might be jacking with it. I thought it might be vibration but it does it without being mounted to the bikes.

Anyway here’s a few more pics.

Just got back from the maiden voyage. It ran and handled fantastic.
A few things to address.
  • When fully warm the idle is too high... gotta correct that. (easy)
  • Too much oil in the oil tank (easy)
  • Shift lever is too high (easy)
  • brake pedal is too low (easy)
  • Speedometer power needs further regulation... LCD is flaky and speed is registering low. I have one of these inbound and will connect it inline with the power to the Speedo and see if that cleans it up enough. (easy but requires tank removal = slight pain in the ass.)
  • Left fuel line is just too darned close to the exhaust. Will need to feed fuel between the carbs and switch to single ended banjos (on hand) and a pair of "T" fittngs on the middle pipe. (easy enough)
  • Need a breather catch can or at least a filter on there to catch the occasional drip (Part of the Triumph charm from back in the day when zero fucks were given about oil drips)
Just thankful there are no difficult things to work out.

Here are the reworked fuel lines. I might redo them eventually with the nice crimped ferrules, but this doesn’t bother me at all.

I also added some heat shields to the exhaust so that I don’t burn muh leg. That shit gets hot...

I spliced in the little voltage regulator thingy into the speedo wiring. Will see how that affects the performance.

Pulled a little oil out of the oil tank too... (sure was dirty already will have to change that at a shorter interval than usual for a break in oil and keep an eye on it.....)

Here’s a little vid of it running after today’s work.

Similarly, the Pandemonium headers I run on the XS, which look very close to your headers are not nearly as obnoxious as one would think. Must be something about the layout or length. You've built another beautiful machine. I'm always impressed by how clean and intricately detailed your bikes end up.

What a gorgeous bike !

I own a T140

I'd be embarrassed to park it next to your bike

Hahaha no I wouldn't, I really couldn't give a shit but if I did park it next to yours , yours would look one million betters

Yeah, I used the Ya-Mama pipes on my XS build a few years ago and it was a similar note/tone.
