Thanks for the heads up Andy, but alas I have no cash for anything at all until next pay mid July... and at that point I expect any outlays will be for the blasting stuff and maybe some new crankshaft bearings.
Anything for the bicycle part will have to wait for the moment but that's cool as it gives me more time to research and work out what the genuine colour schemes from the time were.
At least it looks like there's a number of different reproduction decal sellers on eBay so that shouldn't be a drama once I sort out what they should look like.

My house mate arrived back home with a present for me this morning:
He spends a few nights at his mum's each week (she's 98 and a little wobbly on her feet) and her next door neighbour is very handy. He just happened to have a press in his back yard that popped the sprocket and bearings off the crank shaft very easily. Awesome! A six pack will be paid in due course
Once I find replacement bearings he can press them back on again too which will save me a rather large headache.
I cleaned up the pedal crank and bearings from the Malvern Star tonight:
Everything cleaned up nicely and that now means that both side pedal crank bearings are good to go and don't need replacing. Finally a win!
Then I pulled the rest of the random bits and pieces out of the crate to check them a little more closely.
Four control cable innards that look pretty useless:
Registration label holder, some brackets, and what appears to be brake lines from a car:
But wait, is that some printing or something in the registration label holder?
Well there ya go! Latest registration expired November 1953:
Never seen a label from back then before and it's held up pretty well:
The label holder cleaned up pretty well too:
And last for the night I had another gentle go at getting the float valve filter off and succeeded finally:
It ought to clean up with some carby cleaner.
I think I've pretty much reached the point where I can't do any more until I can get some proper cleaning/degreasing done of the cases and sort out how I'm going to try the walnut shell blasting.
The next two weekends are booked solid with other stuff and there's no available cash until next pay, so I can't see me getting any more done for a bit, although I can start trying to locate some parts such as the new crankshaft bearings and trying to source an ignition coil.
I need other things like forks, brakes, wheels etc. too but the motor is the most important bit for the time being.

I did some Google searching on serial numbers etc. and it all led me to a bicycle forum... never thought I'd end up there!
Anyway, so far I've had '30's and '50's listed as answers, but then last night a guy who appears to have a serious serial number collection approximated it at 1939... works for me
Hopefully I can get something done soon, don't like waiting...

Well payday has passed so I should be able to pick up the blasting gear soon
Also, I'm hoping if the rain does actually clear up like they say today then there's a chance I may have some time to start the proper degreasing of the Cucciolo cases etc. which will be nice.
I'm anxious to get moving on this again...
Oh, and I found a paint scheme that's appropriate for the Malvern Star.

Wouldn't the tank and engine cover some of it once installed? Granted it would have originally and if you are going for a period correct look it would be authentic.

'Tis very pretty! Apparently the guy who did it is some form of guru down in Melbourne and while he's apparently not expensive it will still be way out of budget when I include getting it down there and back...
I think I should be able to get a lot of it done but not to the same extent...
I'm thinking some brackets welded onto the downtube like in Hillsy's photo on the second page of this thread to take care of the tank mounting, and that will mean the motor and tank will cover very little of the paint work.

Ok, some minor progress at last...
Firstly, I got outbid by less than $10 on a donor ladies bike today that would've gotten me most of the bits and pieces I needed... bugger! Even had good original paintwork that I could've used as a reference. Oh well...
I did however find some Westwood 28" wheels on eBay today and have bought them but am waiting for the seller to see if they have suitable mudguards as well. They seem to be in reasonable enough shape, will just need a clean up and paint.
Anyway, I finally got the Cucciolo motor degreased today. Soaked all the bits in my Marine Clean bath for a while and spent a couple of hours scrubbing and hosing:
The fins on the head are the real issue although they're about 1000% better than they were, and one of the pedal cranks is still caked in grime under the teeth as they're really hard to get to. That will need more attention but at least one of them is pretty clean now.
I'm pretty tempted though to leave it all as is given how well it cleaned up and not blast it... however, if I end up with a freshly painted bicycle frame it won't match up real well, so I think it's probably best I stick with the original plan.
Still haven't done anything about a blasting cabinet or anything yet, just haven't had the time. Hopefully soon!

I'd try Soda blasting it or maybe walnut shell media on that aluminum... Have we talked about DIY blasting cabinets? There are several versions out there but I am leaning towards making one out of a big plastic storage bin like these.

Brother those parts look really nice, you did an awesome job getting them so clean! I really love this build and can not wait to see her all back togethor, I have a Ducati 160 sitting here that I will be building soon and watching your build makes me want to work on mine even more! As far as blasting cabinets go I have a pretty nice one here however to be honest with you I really do not care for it much as no matter what I try to do with the vent it still makes a mess and it is difficult to see in once you start blasting even with a light in it so we are building a new system for blasting here at the shop that is very simple so once we build it and test it I will let you know how it works!

After seeing Joe's results with the Bridgestone I'm definitely going to try the walnut shells, especially as I've discovered I can get them and the local auto store has a blasting gun etc. for only $30.
That's the sort of cabinet I'm thinking of making as those containers are a dime a dozen. Thinking some welding gloves would be the go as well... possibly a little bulky but I don't want to accidentally blast my fingers to bits!

I have a couple of 12v fans around that I was thinking of adding to the cabinet. The higher speed one I was thinking of putting on one side with a vent pointing the airflow across the viewing window to attempt to keep it clear, and the lower speed one on the direct opposite side with a filter. Not sure if that will work but figure it's worth a try.
Definitely let me know how your new one goes though!

Me neither Joe! But they should've been at my house mate's work today and they're not... I've sent the eBay seller a message asking for a tracking number and so far no reply! Not happy... was all good communication and very helpful up until today... hopefully they were just delayed sending them and they'll be there tomorrow...

Frustration is setting in here... I can't do anything! After blowing the budget on the wheels/guards I haven't got the blasting gear... discovered the crank bearings are going to be over $110... so I'm just twiddling my thumbs with it at the moment and I hate waiting.
The wheels and guards arrived yesterday and they'll do the job nicely. No pic's yet as I was watching the reply of the MotoGP last night instead.

I got some time in the garage tonight so I took some shots of the new wheels and guards and did another test fit/mock up.
All serviceable but need a damn good clean up and some paint.
This is something like it would look just as a bicycle:
And I had to do the mock up again and see how it looked:
This definitely shows me two things:
1. The front forks are way off, definitely designed for 27 or 26" wheels as they have the front wheel and guard too close to the motor.
2. Rod brakes are definitely out, especially for the rear, as with the motor mounted there would be no way for the rod to still run under the frame rail.
One thing the mock up has done is given me a pretty good idea of what I can do for paint.
I'm thinking a more basic scheme of a navy or royal blue for the main parts of the frame and forks, and a nice crisp white for the detail areas like the surrounds of the stars on the head stock and so forth.
I'll keep the guards white as well, but do the nice raised centre line in blue, and do the reverse for the rims so the outside sections are blue and the raised centre where the spokes go in white.
And I'm obviously going to need drum brakes but given how hard it's proving to find a front 32 spoke one, I wonder if it would be safe enough to just have a rear drum brake?
