1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (1000 miles and more)

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

More light at the end of the tunnel... Just filed my taxes and my refund will cover the remain expenses to finish restoring this beast, including the magneto restoration. Hurry up spring! Now, I need to get the bike out of my living room (I know, I know...), down a flight of stairs and over to my shop soon.

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

That turned out very nice. Looks as nice in the living room as it would out on the streets!

Excellent dialogue - love it.
I am purchasing a 58 DBD 34. It has stamped on the top of the gearbox SC T and I wonder if you know what this is?
Sorry to be a nuisance. Peter1

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Peter 1, thank you. We need pictures of your Goldie! Start a thread on this forum or on Britbike.com. The SC T is a scrambles gearbox. Search on Brikebike for lots of information on your 58 DBD34 and gearbox.

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Swan, That scan is a little hard to read, would you care to spell out what RR and T2 and SC or TRI mean so that OPs reading this can get some idea of the awesome nature of the Goldie :)

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Teazer, you know RRT2 is a close ratio set for 'racing'

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

I know that but it's not my thread. I can't remember what box was in my Db32GS but I think it was STD but with a triumph clutch. So long ago, and so few brain cells survived to tell the story.

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Yeah, it won't mean anything to anyone not riding or restoring a BSA though.
Don't think my A10 would survive close ratio ('52 plunger Golden Flash)

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Watched a bolt up flash blow a rod through the cases on the A74 many decades ago. Big cloud of smoke and debris everywhere - just before the clutch on my T100 came loose and sheared the key.

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Hi Swan, sorry for the temporary 'threadjack'
Yep, they do that, when they don't lift cylinder off case (thin flange round barrel)
By 'bolt up' I guess you mean the semi-unit construction that Harley 'invented' a few years ago? (instead of conventional BSA separate box like the DBD34)
One advantage though, it runs a duplex primary chain as things stay lined

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Teazer, here is the BSA gearbox chart: http://bsa-a10.hailwood.com/images/gearbox/chart1.jpg

I packed up and shipped out my magdyno to be rewound with a new condenser, remagnetized, tested etc. I had been e-mailing with Joe V's Cycle and Doug Wood and both come well recommended, but I went with Joe a. because he is two hours away and has the skills, experience and equipment do it right. Additionally he rides a Gold Star and is building a Triton, so he has good taste in bikes (like me...).

My tax returns are in and I now have the money to complete the project and have a little left over so I am considering a vintage 10" Atlas lathe or a Schwinn Black Phantom as my next restoration project. Looking at the Schwinn in the morning, the price is too good to pass up.

I spent several hours last weekend going through each plate in my parts book and noting every part I need to complete my bike. Ordering a chain guard, misc. hardware, side stand, fuel lines and horn tonight and tomorrow.

After much internal debate, I decided to stay with the original 6 volt system as a baseline, with original dynamo, regulator and a new 6v battery and 6v horn. I can easily upgrade to 12 v in the future if I really think it is necessary. I am ordering a new braided wiring harness and extra connectors and will modify it to fit my original Lucas QD plug.

Thanks all for bearing with me and this project for such a long time. The days are getting longer, the sun is still up when I leave work, spring will be here soon and I will finally be able to ride this bike. Stay tuned...

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Good to hear you have the cash to finish it up. Even though I was at the Winona Riders shop last week, I have yet to see the Goldie. Does it really exist? :) See you around.

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Yup, I am "that guy" with a motorcycle in his living room. I am television free for two years now, but spend a lot of time staring at my bike...

Re: 1962 BSA DBD34 Gold Star restoration (We have ignition...)

Thanks, dcmspikes. Quick update, the final parts are starting to arrive and despite feeling ill with sinus and respiratory crud, I dragged my sick ass over to the shop to do some work.

First, my harness and connectors arrived from British Wiring. First time buying from them and they are great! Good communication, fast shipping and I now have a nice cloth wound harness with tail light section and dynamo wires included. I know my 1962 BSA GS should have a plastic wrapped harness, but I like the look of the older cloth bound harness. I'll take the heat from the "correct part police".

Using my old harness as a guide, I converted a standard BSA harness to the Quick Detach style using my QD set up from Tricor UK.

There are some minor differences between the two harnesses and I think I finally have it sorted. Once I test it on the bike, I will post a complete diagram. I could not find a Gold Star wiring diagram, but I found a Rocket Gold Star diagram that was close to my original loom.

I had a difficult time considering a $150 replica Lucas Altette horn, but found a very nice 6v Italian made replica from Domiracer for $56. I looks really nice and weighs over 2 pounds. Have not tested it yet because I still need to find a 6 volt battery.

I have a nice pile of misc hardware and am waiting on my sidestand and chainguard from Burton Bike Bits in the UK. I have a busy week coming up and will be offline for a while. I need to get the bike out of my house and over to the shop to fit the final parts, add fluids, await my restored magdyno and get ready to fire her up.

Soon...

I love the pictures in this thread. So clean. This bike is going to be beautiful when done.
