"For the sake of my 11 year old son, please keep this thread CLEAN so he can read it and look at it. Please no foul language or dirty humor. Please be considerate in how you reply. Thank you in advance"

This is my first father and son project. My son Alaric is 11 years old and has seen me work on engines since he could walk. He has seen me work on motorcycles for the past two years and I didn't think he had much interest, but to my surprise he wanted one for himself. He is pretty handy with the tools and although he doesn't always put things back where they belong, he enjoys wrenching when he gets the chance to.

He started out by pointing out at a small 2 cycle bike he had seen at the local dumpster a month ago. I told him it would be better if he looked for something in better shape and that could at least roll. I told him I would see what I could find on craigslist. He kept asking me if I had found something on craigslist ever since that day.

About 10 days ago I saw a running (or so the guy claimed ) 1971 Honda SL350 for $200. I told my son about it and he asked if he could see a photo of it. His eyes beamed when he saw it and said he liked it. Somehow, he could see potential in this beat up bike. I told him it would take a lot of work and $$ and patience and that he would have to do all the work. He asked me if I could be there when he worked on it to guide him. I told him I would help him with the heavy and critical stuff, he smiled.

So I picked up this bike after work last Wednesday and he was waiting for me on the driveway eagerly. I had to ask my neighbor to help me unload the bike from my truck because I had recently had ACL reconstruction surgery on my left knee. The previous owner loaded the bike up for me.
We hauled the bike onto the shed and I told Alaric he would have to wait until I was feeling better to help him out.

He spent a lot of time in the shed looking at the bike and taking photos of it. Here are some of the photos he took.
I know how much you guys love photos.

The previous owner bought this and rigged the heck out of it and ran it on a farm and backwoods.
I asked my son what direction he wanted to go with the bike, since this model was meant to go on hills, dirt, street and pretty much everywhere. He said he did not really like the tracker look and wanted to go for a cafe racer look but still be able to take it on the open fields (where he will be riding the first few years) We worked out a budget, (something I felt he needed to learn and he paid close attention to) made a spread sheet of all the things we needed or wanted for the bike, and added an asterisk next to what was priority to get the bike rolling (mostly everything lol)

Well he could not wait for me to get better and decided to pull the bike out of the shed on his own, turns out he dropped it on the grass, then got reprimanded by my wife because he did not wait, then she helped him lift the bike up and they rolled it to the concrete back patio.

After my wife told me what had happened, I snuck out to the kitchen to see what he was up to and took this photo.

Then I went outside and asked him how he got the bike out there and why didn't he wait, yada yada. He told me the bike was fine and that it wasn't that bad and that he was fine. Apparently he doesn't like that fender way up there, and he wanted to start working on it.

He also removed the handlebars, by this point I helped him out some, I told him the name of the parts we were removing and pointed out and asked how he wanted his headlight to be and since we wanted it lower we removed the upper triple tree and found it was cracked.

I decided to buy a used one and called it a day ( I wasn't feeling too good)

Yesterday, we removed the seat and rear fender,

Then removed the tank.

We called it a day from that point, and I ordered some more parts that we needed and parts he wanted.
I will keep you guys posted on this.

That's awesome, man. I hope you and the kid have a great time with it.

Warms my heart to no end... and its awesome to see him so enthused about it. I'll be watching this one closely.

Thanks for the compliments. Hopefully we can remove the engine and some other stuff over the weekend.
I have ordered several parts already including a Clymers manual.

My son is very excited with this build and can't wait to get working on it.

I recently ordered an upper triple from ebay because the stock one was cracked and broken. Turns out the one I bought was also cracked and broken. I'm asking the seller for a refund. That's the thing with ebay, it can be hit or miss.

I have a question for all those who have a CB350. I noticed that the upper triple piece on the cb350's are different than those on the SL350's the SL350's you can tighten the bolts on the upper triple to secure the forks. But I''ve seen the CB350's dont have a way to tighten them down. It looks like the just precission fit on the forks. I wonder if i could use a CB350 upper triple on my SL350 forks. They are both 33mm. Either that or upgrade the whole forks and triple tree all together for some off a CB550 or so. more money though. More photos to come soon.

This is a great thread and an awesome way to kick it with your boy.
That's how me and my old man connected when I was a teen after all the rebel rousin' I was doing.

Excited for when my 8 year old is ready to get dirty with me on a big project. So far he is manager of tools and flashlight!

Man so cool! Both my parents were professors so now I'm 30 and still just learning about everything! What a head start!

That bike has a lot of potential to be really cool. I think the Heiwa style bikes (http://www.heiwa-mc.jp/) or the small Dues bikes would be a great inspiration.

Thanks for the inspiration, that green one is just amazing. I'll run it by my son and see what he thinks.

The green one is really funky, I've saved a copy of that one to my inspiration folder as well!
What are the handling implications of running such a chubby rubber up front?

In addition to this site, you should consider registering over at Hondatwins.net. You'll see a lot of the same members.....Between the two sites you should be able to get any technical question you could conjure up answered.

very cool man, its awesome your doin this with your son, he will always remember it.
i hope if i have kids someday i can do the same.

I don't know how it would handle, but it sure looks good. i don't think we will run such a fat tire on our build though.

Joe, thanks for the encouragement. I don't expect us to finish project too soon. I have to yet finish my TX650, it was done, but now I want to do more to it, My seca, I have been doing some work to it, needs paint and upholstery ( I want to learn how to upholster)

Indiesol, thanks for the advice. I will definetly look into it ASAP. I have been browsing so it will definetly be a good source for info..

Hurley, You and your stinking bike is making me buy 3 hondas by the end of the year. Did you used to surf? I just wondered because of your user name.
See you all tomorrow.

Hahaha awesome man hondas are great lol possibilities are endless.

I actualy currently surf, no to often as I'm a ways away but I try to get out whenever possible.

cool deal man, I used to surf, but I'm sorta landlocked for now. I live 2 1/2 hours away from the closest beach and I have a family and got rid of my surfboard when I moved to NC. All I have is my body board, so at least it's something even if I'm a sponger now, lol

Awesome, in lots of ways. Cool that you're able to involve your son, and terrific that he's motivated enough to initiate the project. He seems to have a good idea of what he wants as well.

Enjoy the project, and I'll be watching your progress ;)

cheers

cool, little project going on. I've got two little ones that are too little right now, my son is kinda interested but my daughter is very interested whenever I'm wrenching.
She already knows what colors she wants the bike as well.

Thanks again guys, today we got a late start but managed to remove the engine and we also received the cb350 tank we ordered in the mail. The shipper did not even pack it in a box. Instead he wraped it with shrink wrap, lots of it. but if the USPS guy would have droped it it would have dented bad. Anyhow. I t surviced the trip from California. It has one dent, but not too bad, some surface rust, and it's really really clean inside. No rust on the inside is a big plus. Anyhow, on with the photos.

CB350's up to but not including the G model (so all the K# ones) the top triple sort of bolted down into the top of the fork. what you need if you want to just get going is a top triple from a CB360. that'll fit and have the usual pinch bolt arrangement you're looking for
