Yeah! a balanced 277O motor would be bitchin and smooth!
 
They make decent power, mine made 45hp, 37tq at the wheel. Bored 2nd over with an XS1 cam. If you find the clutch needs help you can use the friction discs from the APE ckgs1000 kit and an extra steel to have an 8 plate clutch.

After pulling out every fork, front end, bearing, axle and spacer I own, I finally figured out a suspension combo. Stock swing arm with DR370 shocks and a CB750 front end with air suspension and spring upgrade. I everything here will get rebuilt and shocks replaced, but I wanted to figure out what works first.

I’ve had some people debate with me the effectiveness of this, so I thought I’d show a side-by-side view.

Left- 15 min by hand with #000 steel wool and Simichrome polish

Right- unpolished, rusty fork tube

Don't use the steel wool on aluminum. It will leave tiny particles and they will rust. Doe's wonders on rusty steel and I'm a big fan of Semichrome. I see you have some aluminum wheels. I'm planning to be in Arkansas the first of November and I was going to check with someone I know about a set. He's got a ton of XS650 stuff and uses later mag wheels on his builds. Thought maybe he would have a set that I could get for you. It's looking really sledish now!
 
I have a Radian swingarm that would look the bomb on that thing... :) Should fit like stock if I recall. Will dig it out and see what's what. I can get it to South Carolina easy enough so getting it to you should be easy.

Any of you XSperts recognize what I’m missing here? Since this thing came in pieces, I’m starting to discover what’s missing. The swing arm axle bolt being one thing. I bought one off of EBay that appears too long. So either I’m missing something, they changed the width for certain years, or something else is wrong...

There is a difference between the early 650s and 1974 and later models. I believe you might have the wrong shaft for a 72. 72 and earlier 650s had a 3 piece pivot tube inside the swingarm. In 73 they changed to a one piece. In 74 they changed again. The pivot bolts also changed in 74. The Yamaha part number for the earlier shaft is 256-22141-00-00. MikesXS has this part under#27-1071.

You are very welcome. Nothing mystical or memory related to knowing the year of your frame. I had a similar experience with an early frame and thought that might be the case. I forgot you had the frame year in the title and actually went back to your first post. There is was 1972! When I posted my reply I noticed the year clearly stated in the title! So doh!
 
Worked a permanent mount for the rear fender. This fender is from a 72 Yamaha AT1. I added a strut for the forward mount and moved two of the rear frame mounts to work with the AT1 brackets. I also got the seat roughed out to form. And then a mock-up of the front fender.

The rolling frame went to the barn for a bit while I work on some other builds, but the engine got its due this week. I pulled it apart, vapor honed everything, then put it back together. I need to figure out the stator and clutch adjust cover situations, as I figured out I have neither. I may fabricate my own stator cover.

Definitely make your own stator cover - doesn’t need any clearance inside machined or anything if I recall.

MikesXS sells both covers.
