Here is my 72 yammy R5 I found in an old ladys garage, I got it for all of nothing. Its a rat project with a budget of $250. As she sits now there is $55 spent so far. $45 for new coils and 10 for steel to make it rigid. I havnt had it running yet but she should be all right. I cleaned and rebuilt the carbs and have spark on 1 side. I hope i just have a dirty set of points or a bad condenser. It will look pretty much like it does in the final picture when its done. I may rattle can the the frame black or I may just let it rust. Im keeping the tank the way it is and i just love the denim seat. The wheel base is stretched 6" and the bike is lowered 2. This bike is for fun my cafe is gonna be pretty.
I hope you like her.

Re: 72 R5 bobber work in progress

Two stroke bobber, I fucking love it!!! You sir, have balls of titanium. You will probably kill yourself on this machine so I think it proper that we start a memorial thread to you now.

I will be following this closely!

I have nothing against you choppin' that but you realize that bike was worth $1K when you started??

I still love this, I fuckin' love it!!

Re: 72 R5 bobber work in progress

The best way I can describe this is that as a songwriter once in a while you come across a song that makes you think, "thats fucking brilliant, why didn't I think of that?"

Re: 72 R5 bobber work in progress

thanks for the positive feed back guys. I got the fender mounted, Im really suprised at how well this bike is coming together. Its got me wanting to make it nice instead of leaving her a multicolored rat. Tomorrow im going to tackle the air cleaner and air inlet tube. Ive got some good ideas that i think you will like. Anyway on to the pics.

I need to get a wider rear tire but aside from that I dig it. Wadda ya think?

Re: 72 R5 bobber work in progress (all hail the 2 stroke bobber!!)

what are you going to do with the front fender? that looks trick so far

Re: 72 R5 bobber work in progress (all hail the 2 stroke bobber!!)

If you're going to change the color, find a ratty R5 tank, that tank you have in that shape is pretty sought after.

The top of the tank has 4 dents on that top that dont show up in the pictures. it looks like someone stood on it in the past. If i do re paint it i will repaint it just as it is and make the rear fender match. I like the look of the tank so much in fact im going to duplicate it on my 74 rd350 cafe. It may sadden you to know that i stretched an rd tank nicer than this one.

As for the bike being worth 1k before i cut it up, the way I figure it is its still cheaper and a hell of more bad ass than my Sportster. If I really wanted to I could pick up an RD frame for next to nothing and put her back together. Im looking for 2 more R5s or 350s I want a tracker and a stocker. That way all of my bases are covered.

Re: 72 R5 bobber work in progress (all hail the 2 stroke bobber!!)

I actually read through your build a couple weeks ago. Im thinking something like this for my street tracker

Re: 72 R5 bobber work in progress (all hail the 2 stroke bobber!!)

Classic and beautiful. I'm rethinking my rear hoop. maybe shortening it a bit.

Re: 72 R5 bobber work in progress (all hail the 2 stroke bobber!!)

I thought about going the way you did on your bike for the rear of the seat, but the way I ride my cafe I need the rear of the seat to support my ass on that full throttle 1-2 and 2-3 shift. These guys with their 4 strokes will never understand the thrill of a super lightweight 2 stroke. I think if your bike were mine I would bend up a small rear hoop and put a 2" or so back rest, sorry but stopper to keep you on there when the wheelies happen.

Re: 72 R5 bobber Mockup Is Finished

Mock up is FINISHED This is pretty muck how it will look when its done. The frame is going to get welded and a coat of paint and the inlet tube also needs welded up but aside from that my rat is done, I think I may actually decide to give her a flat black paint job and some header wrap for a finishing touch. I'm kinda torn on that right now. It may be best to get her running first.
ant way heres my new intake

Re: 72 R5 bobber Mockup Is Finished

Are you going to build a proper rear triangle? Everything else is cool. But I think that half-stepped hard tail will keep your bike from ever getting any real respect, and may bury all your other neat mods.

Check out the Dirt Nap...

I have a feeling its going to be a bitch to get the jetting right, I think that I may be able to get it. The mainfold that runs to the carbs is pretty symmetrical and smooth. We'll see.

The plan was to do a full rear triangle but the way the frame is under the engine it would be a real pain in the ass and its just not worth the effort. If i decide to do a full triangle I just have to cut off the swing arm, and weld the bottom tubes to the wheel plates on the swing arm and remove the swing arm bolt, after of course i completely rebuild the frame. I agree it looks much better but you know what?

Fuck it, Its a rat.
