1974 CL360 Floating Donuts Thingamajig

irk miller

You've been mostly-dead all day.
DTT BOTM WINNER
Here is a 1974 Honda CL360 in really bad shape. What you see is what I get. This engine is locked up. I do, however have a spare engine in very good shape. What are we going to do? I have no earthly idea. For that reason, it’s in the specials section. It could go 100 direction in 100 days. I keep saying I want to do another cafe build. Then I end up doing something more like a tracker. I have pieces parts all over the place that likely end up driving this build. Some type of racer styled bike would be tits, I know that much.

First things first: make one of these engines a 378. I’ve taken the engine that’s not locked up apart. The jugs will get mailed to Mototech USA. I have also gone ahead and prepped my GS850 pistons to get mailed with the jugs. The edges of the skirts are cleaned up, then both have been cleaned and vapor honed.

No telling how long this build goes, since I have an Airhead to finish, and a CB350. Regardless, 360s always find their way onto my bench.

You really dig those little twins. The front drum is neat. Did they ever come with discs?

Yeah, only first year came with the drum. Need to decide if I want to keep the drum. I have some really nice wheels and forks, if I want to go disc and USD.

Honda 360 disease must never leave someone once they are hit with it, my condolences.

The front drum brake looks great, so...mechanical. Always inspiring to see you get so creative with your bikes. Definitely watching.

Thanks, Jimbo. As Hurco made obvious, I have another thread with this bike. I actually forgot. LOL. Been bouncing back and forth on whether to go big wheel or to go back to a vintage race or cafe style build. The cost of doing a big wheel can be tricky and I absolutely don't want to go $2k plus on a bike like this. If you want to have fun and appreciate your small budget build, start looking up BW350 or ATC parts. They can be nuts on prices.

Following, interested in which way you go. May steal....uuuuhhhh.....be inspired by your ideas.

I thought for sure this engine would be toast. The sprocket cover was jammed packed full of dirt dobber nests and the chain had it all jammed up and stuck in gear. There were no carbs or exhaust. We thought for sure it was locked up. Once I got the cover off, it kicked over. Turns out not only is the engine free, it has good compression of 155. I’ll still pull it apart and do an internal inspection, but good chance this gets nothing more than a vapor hone cleanup, new hardware, fresh gaskets and seals. It’s a two punch engine, so it’s had the recall services.
